Point of Pride #6 - Summer Youth Programs

Herkimer County Community College is a busy place in the summer! It’s not unusual to see kids of all ages in the classrooms and on the athletic fields. With a variety of summer youth programming, local kids have the opportunity to explore areas of interest, learn something new and work on their athletic skills. And they make new friendships and have a lot of fun in the process.

 

Our summer camps include Art Camp, Robotics Mini-Camp and Calling All Fashionistas, as well as Soccer, Baseball, Basketball, Softball, and All-Sports camps. This summer nearly 500 children are registered for summer programs.

Our summer programs provide a reasonable, healthy and fun opportunity for families from our local community and beyond. And unbeknownst to them, while having fun, kids are also learning team building, problem solving and leadership skills.

“This is our second year doing a fashion show during the summer,” said Assistant Professor of Fashion, Buying & Merchandising Amy Roepnack who taught both the Art Camp and Calling All Fashionistas program. The Art Camp concluded the week with an art show in the Cogar Gallery to showcase the artwork created throughout the week, and the fashionistas participated in a fashion show to present the various outfits and accessories they made. Roepnack says, “The kids love to explore at this age and use different techniques in the fashion world. It makes it exciting for them, but for myself as well. I love teaching them a style which they might not have come across yet at their age!”

The purpose of opening our doors (and fields) to children in the summer is two-fold. It is an opportunity to expose young students to our campus, and allow the kids to imagine themselves pursuing a college education someday. It is also a wonderful way to support the educational needs of our community, which is part of our mission.
