This course is designed for close study of fiction and non-fiction works by African American writers in the 19th and 20th centuries. In this class, we will explore themes within the chosen texts, the historical context in which they were written, and how they speak to people of all races today. Themes include re-reading and re-writing of history, the marginalization of African American people, and the formation of identity in the world today.
