I'm back!

Welcome back to Herkimer Colleges Student Blog! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Christian Hurtado and this is my second semester not only a student but also an employee of the college.  I couldn’t be more excited,  It feels great to be back in the “Herk Nation”!

My winter break was fabulous! There’s nothing better than spending quality time with your family and friends after being away at college for four months. I also turned 18 during winter break, which was exciting! It’s a liberating feeling knowing you can finally sign legal documents on your own, go to the doctors by yourself, or even buy a car!

Last semester was filled with new experiences, new opportunities, and new friends. I anticipate the same for this semester! Towards the end of my first semester I had applied to be a Resident Assistant. I got the job and all that it  entails. Being an RA has it perks and of course a downside. One perk being that you get a free Student ID and one downside is that sometimes you may be on duty until 1 am. Before the actual semester starts, you must come early to campus and go through a series of trainings to gain a better understanding of the campus and what to do in certain situations. It may sound like a lot but in the end it’s worth it.

This semester I have set goals that I wish to achieve. One of them being to start exercising. There is a myth about the “Freshman 15”. Do you really gain 15 pounds as a freshman? I would say yes. Not only have I added a few extra pounds since I started college but I have been told by friends that they have too. With spring break coming in March, it gives me more of a reason to start eating healthy and to work out.

This is the first week of classes and it is already starting out to be a great semester. I have met some wonderful new friends, my new teachers have such great enthusiasm, and the weather is slightly warmer than last semester which tells me it’s warming up already. I’m beyond excited for this semester and I hope you are too!

Check back next week as I share my first-year experiences with you!– Christian Hurtado
