Fall in Herkimer

During the time span of September 15th to October 15th Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated. Being that my nationality is Puerto Rican and Columbian, Hispanic Heritage Month means a great deal to me. There is one thing that I embrace about my Hispanic culture and that is the food! As we ended the celebration, a few of our resident assistants prepared traditional Hispanic foods such as pastelitos(empanadas) and arroz con habichuelas(rice and beans). It's been awhile since I've had Spanish food and with just one mouthful, I fell in love all over again!

Considering that I am a Communication Arts major, a few of my classes are taken place in our Herkimer College TV Studio. I can’t begin to express the feeling I get as I walk into the studio. It feels surreal being able to use the same equipment that major studios use to shoot their productions, you truly gain a hands on experience. Every Tuesday and Thursday, at 1pm, students just like me shoot a news broadcast that gets aired live on TV and on our Communication Arts page on Youtube!

Now that we are in the fall and holiday season, a lot of fall events are taking place on campus and off campus. Just this past weekend we took a trip to Cooperstown to check out some stores and even visited an Apple Cider Mill. On campus we’ve had a few events take place in the upper lobby of the Robert McLaughlin College Center. Decorating pumpkins was probably my favorite event so far. Coming up in the next few weeks our Black Latino Student Union is sponsoring a Halloween party featuring some performances by some of our dance club students. I honestly cannot wait!

Football season is also in full effect and I’m rooting for the Buffalo Bills 100%! Being a college student definitely has some pretty nice perks. One of them is getting major discounts on a wide variety of things such as food, clothes and even tickets to events. Recently our student activities director sent out an email containing a promo code which offered 20% off for a few upcoming Buffalo Bills games!

Check back next week as I share my first-year experiences with you!
