Bowling Teams Build Foundation for Success

The first year back as an intercollegiate sport, the men's and women's bowling teams established the foundation for a successful program. Under first year head coach Tom Rathbun, the men's team finished fourth in the Mountain Valley Conference, missing third place by only one game. The highlight of the season for the men came when the Generals hosted a league conference match and swept all five games. Dylan Brown led all bowlers this year with a 210 average and received All-Conference honors. Team captains Josh Gross and Lamar Williams, along with Brown, will return next year to provide a strong nucleus for the men's program. The Lady Generals were led by captain Sara Abele who finished 10th in the conference and 10th at Nationals. Abele and co-captain Tamme Wheeler will return next season to lead the women. With several recruits already committed to the program for next year, the Generals are on their way to becoming a successful program.

The Herkimer County Community College men's and women's bowling teams recently held a fundraiser at the State Bowling Center in Ilion to raise money to purchase portable bowling kits for the troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Each team member obtained sponsors who agreed to pay a penny for each pin knocked down over a four-hour period. The event raised $450 which was turned in to the proprietor of the bowling center, Mr. Rod Brown. Women's team captain Tamme Wheeler raised the most money as she collected $76.84. "I think it is important for our team to be involved in community service projects and this seemed like a perfect fit for us. These young adults understand what is going on over there and they wanted to do something to show their appreciation. I am very proud of all of them," said coach Tom Rathbun. A card will be enclosed with the bowling kits signed by each member of the team thanking the troops for their efforts.

The Herkimer County Men's and Women's bowling team competed in Buffalo this past weekend at the NJCAA Nationals Tournament. The Women's Team picked-up their first wins of the season as they finished sixth out of eight teams. Captain Sara Abele posted the 10th best national average among 45 bowlers on very difficult lane conditions with a 170 average. Beth Gratien finished ranked 25th nationally with a 150 average. Freshman Courtney Miller was one of the few national bowlers in the tournament that actually increased her overall average from the regular season as she improved her avg. by nearly 15 pins per game.

The Men's team finished 12th of 16 teams. Dylan Brown lead the Generals with a 184 avg. which ranked him 18th nationally. Lamar Williams ranked 39th among 91 bowlers with a 171 average. Senior Tim Nuthall who was used sparingly (excuse the pun) this season "came off the bench" to roll one of the highest games for the Generals over the weekend when he posted a 210 game. Tim also provided a much needed punch to all the Baker format games he bowled on Saturday.

Congratulations to all Herkimer County bowlers for helping to establish the HCCC Bowling teams after a two year absence. The program will continue to grow due largely to the special efforts put forth by both teams this year.
