Herkimer Men's Lacrosse Finishes 2008 Season at 15-3

The men’s lacrosse team had a great season with an overall record of 15–3 losing in the NJCAA Final Four National Championship Tournament and finishing 10-1 in Region III.

The 2008 team consisted of 32 players from 11 states and three countries. “IT was incredible to watch these guys come together from different walks of life and different places and form the family that they became.  There is a saying that you come into the Herkimer family a boy and you leave Herkimer a man.  I can definitely say this is true for the seniors who are moving on to four-year schools.”

Many players were recognized this year at the regional, conference and national levels.

Justin Hayes ended his senior year with 138 points and a two-year total of 206 points. He was the recipient of the 2007-2008 SUNY Chancellors award, Offensive MVP, 1 st team All Region attackmen and was recently elected 1 st team All American and a two time academic All-American.  Justin is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and will attend either Hofstra University, Ohio State or Siena College in the fall.

Dave Brock, for the second year in a row, was voted All-Region and All–American.  A two-time Academic All-American, Dave will attend University of Albany on a full scholarship.  Dave’s career at Herkimer has been one that will soon not be forgotten with over 150 career points.

Zach Bates was starting goalie this year and was recognized as the Region III Player of the Year and was voted to 1 st Team All–American.  Zach will attend Adelphi University or Ohio State in the fall.  “Zach is the best goalie I have ever had the pleasure of being associated with,” said Dommer.

Kevin Kemp was a midfielder for us and had a solid two-year performance for the Generals.  Kevin was a two-year All-Region selection and was the 2008 Region III Midfielder of the Year and voted 1 st Team All–American.  Kevin is considering Nazareth College, Bellarmine University and Siena College for next fall.

John Cattani transferred to HCCC from Limestone College in South Carolina last year.  He is a two-time Mountain Valley Conference selection, voted All-Region this year, and was recently voted All-American.  John will be returning to Herkimer in the fall to finish up his degree as he transferred in late.

Freshman midfielder Doug Hoch was voted to the All-Region team and recently voted to the All–American team.  Doug will be returning next fall in pursuit of his degree.

Tom Szevin, Brandon Phelps, Pat Sullivan and Joey Lehner were all voted to the All-Mountain Valley Conference team.

Coach Rich Dommer said, “Zach was a large part of this win. Herkimer wins and loses together as a family, but Zach helped his family in a big way today as he has all year. Overall we are happy with our regular season results, even though we wish we could have that one game back, but that’s what the playoffs are for. As long as we stay focused and ignore the distractions and play our style of lacrosse, we think the boys can get what they want, but it is one game at a time.”

Generals win 17 - 5 over Hudson Valley C.C.

The men's lacrosse team traveled to Hudson Valley CC Thursday afternoon to play their fourth game in six days. Coach Rich Dommer said, "Four games in six days is extremely exhausting, both mentally and physically, and our staff has been very impressed in how the guys did it." The Generals' overall record is now 12-1, and 10-0 in Region 3, which makes Herkimer the #1 seed in the regional playoffs. This is the first time in four years the Generals have gone into the tournament ranked #1.

The scoring for Herkimer came from multiple team members. Justin Hayes, Dave Brock and Jake Koch all came up big. Hayes came up with 1 goal and 7 assists. Although this was a game littered with penalty flags, Herkimer played through the adversity and held strong under the leadership of both goalies Zach Bates and Danny Solazzo. Bates had 15 saves and Solazzo made 7 saves in the win. A breakout game was had by freshman Pat Sullivan on the defensive half. "Pat stepped it up scooping very timely loose balls and clearing the ball up to the offense. Patty really impressed us tonight and will be rewarded for this," said Dommer. "We have one more regular season game left and it's a big one for us. I know we are riding these last couple of wins out right now, and feeling good about them, but we have to get right back at it and focus on Saturday's game. All the hard work we put in this past fall and during early spring will pay off this late in the season if the boys can stay focused. This is a crucial time for us to come together and play our family style of lacrosse -- Herkimer Lacrosse."

Next up for Herkimer is Essex CC from Baltimore MD. The game will be played Saturday in HCCC's Wehrum Stadium at 3pm.

Herkimer went into the game ranked #2 in the NJCAA while Onondaga was ranked #1. It was a high tempo game, end-to-end, strong transition – racehorse lacrosse. Normally not noted for scoring, but more of a defensive specialist, Drew Crutcher had a great shot right next to the keepers ear and finished with 1 – 0. Herkimer’s face–off guys were challenged all day and played great. The defense was led by senior goalie Zach Bates who played solid all day considering he took a couple well-placed shots to the body. The defense was up the entire game and did a great job of staying together.

March 5, 2008

The Herkimer County Community College men’s lacrosse team traveled to West Point on Tuesday March 4 for a game at 7pm. Herkimer won 17-11 scoring the first goal of the game nine seconds after the opening whistle. Every player on the Herkimer roster got playing time, and 10 players scored.

Goalies Zach Bates and Danny Solazzo had a great night in the cage. Zach had 18 saves and Danny had eight saves in the win. Coach Rich Dommer said “Zach played one of the best games I’ve seen a goalie play especially when he was outside of the cage. From saving the ball and clearing it right away to the offense to making diving out of bounds passes right into our middies sticks, he played a really awe inspiring game.”

Joey Lehner had a near perfect night in the face-off circle winning 16 of 21 face offs taken. “Joey put on a clinic on the field, and John Cattani and Jake Koch were great with getting the ground balls that Joey pushed their way when he didn’t scoop them up himself,” said Dommer. The attack line had a solid performance as a unit scoring eight goals and dishing six assists between the three of them. Defensemen John Cattani and Matt Molloy also scored goals.

“Cattani claims to be the best shooter in Herkimer history as a defenseman, and maybe he’s right,” said Dommer. Cattani scored seven goals last season and is off to a positive start this season. Molloy had a picture perfect shot after clearing the ball down the field himself. J.P. Finn scored his first collegiate goal along with Dan Lawson, Doug Hoch and Matt Molloy.

Dommer said “Our defense as a whole played really well tonight. We communicated together and pressured their offense extremely well, not letting them dictate the outcome of the game. The best part about the game, aside from being guests on West Point campus, was the leadership that we saw come from so many of the guys. The flow of the game was good and we played north to south all night up and down the field. I won’t say it was a perfect game - there is always plenty of work to do, but this early in the season the coaching staff is all-around pleased with how we executed.”

In addition to the game, a highlight of the trip was a presentation by HCCC Professor Bruce Caskey who traveled to West Point to discuss the history of West Point with the team. “Professor Caskey had all eyes on him as he spoke about the historic campus-the boys loved it. He also sent a really intense message to the team about the leadership, courage and honor that it takes to be successful. The team and coaching staff are very appreciative of Professor Caskey’s support. He will be greatly missed.” Caskey will retire this spring after 19 years at HCCC.
