Women's Lacrosse Players Receive Academic Scholarships
May, 2006 - Four Herkimer County Community College women’s lacrosse players have accepted athletic scholarships to attend four-year colleges in the fall.
Stephanie Berube (Elmont, NY) will attend Mercyhurst College ( Erie, PA) on an athletic scholarship. Berube scored the winning goals in all three sudden-death victories last season. A two-year starter for the lacrosse team, she was also a two-year starter for the College’s nationally ranked soccer team. According to Coach Wehrum, Berube is one of the top female athletes at Herkimer. “Her great speed and scoring ability are crucial to the team’s success. She will be an instant impact player at Mercyhurst,” said Wehrum. Berube was named Green and Gold Club Athlete of the Month for March 2006. She is a 2004 graduate of Sewanhaka High School and the daughter of Stephen and Barbara Berube. She plans to major in English at Mercyhurst.
Holly Brown (Carthage, NY) has also accepted an athletic scholarship from Mercyhurst College. A two-year starter on defense, Brown is one of the toughest and most aggressive players on the team. “Holly’s passion, enthusiasm and love of the game are communicated in everything she says and does,” said Head Coach Paul Wehrum. A Photographic Technology major, Brown was an Academic All-American as a freshman. She is the daughter of Barry and Anita Brown and a 2004 graduate of Carthage High School.
Terri George (Jordan, NY) has accepted a lacrosse scholarship from Division II powerhouse Limestone College ( Gaffney, SC). Team captain and all-tournament selection at the 2005 NJCAA tournament, George is a dominant force for the Lady Generals. “Terri’s ability to win draws and score goals, as well as her defensive play and overall hustle, is evident to all who witness this outstanding athlete,” said Coach Wehrum. An Academic All-American as a freshman, Terri will graduate with an A.S. degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences: Physical Education. George is the daughter of Nancy George and a 2004 graduate of Jordan-Elbridge High School.
Carolynn Loan (Vernon Center, NY) will attend Queens University of Charlotte (NC) on a lacrosse scholarship. Loan is a two-year starter at midfield and one of the team’s top offensive threats. Wehrum said “Carolyn plays both ends of the field and is instrumental in both the offensive and defensive packages.” As a freshman, Loan was an Academic All-American and an All-Tournament team selection at the 2005 NJCAA tournament. Loan is the daughter of Frank and Diane Loan and a 2004 graduate of Cazenovia High School.
In only its third year, the women’s lacrosse program has a record of success including a Regional Championship (2005) and two NJCAA Academic Team of the Year titles (2004 and 2005). The 2006 team has an overall record of 7-0 on the season. |
