Student-Athletes Named to Green and Gold Club

An Yamada, a senior from Chiba-ken, Japan, led the women’s tennis team to a 7-2 season record and a second place finish at the Region III tournament where she captured two individual championships at the first singles and first doubles flights. Head Coach Katie Scanlon said “An is a very talented and well-developed tennis player. She has mastered heavy topspin from the baseline and can mix up her shots with a perfectly executed slice. She’s also not afraid to approach and play the net, and she plays with no emotion which gives her an edge over her opponents.” Yamada finished the season with a 10-1 singles record and an 8-1 doubles record. She earned two spots on the All Region III team, first team All-Region for first singles and first team All-Region for first doubles.

Senior midfielder Pete Givas, of Liverpool, helped the Herkimer Generals win the program’s 19th Region III men’s soccer championship. Givas was voted Region III Final Four MVP, made the all-tournament team and was named to the first team All-Region III. Earlier in the month, he was selected Region III Athlete of the Week and NJCAA Division III National Player of the Week. Head Coach Pepe Aragon said, “Pete was the ‘general’ of our defense this season.”

Results of Region III Tournament
October 6-7, 2007

Herkimer’s women’s tennis team captured three individual Region III championships at top flights that qualify them to compete at the national level.

At 1st singles (the most difficult flight), An Yamada rolled through the bracket without losing even one set to her opponents.  She defeated Liza Nathan-Serio of Hudson Valley 6-2, 6-0 in the first round.  She then eliminated #1 seeded Jamie Mishoe of Broome 6-4, 6-2.  In the final, An easily handled Ashley Cirelli of Adirondack 6-0, 6-2.  An is the proven best player in Region III!

An Yamada and her doubles partner Megumi Yoshikawa teamed together to win the 1st doubles flight championship.  They defeated Mohawk Valley in the final by a score of 7-5, 6-2- once again proving to be the best doubles team in Region III.

Alli Schlieder and Jessica Beauvais captured Herkimer’s final championship at 2nd doubles.  They defeated #1 seeded Broome in straight sets  7-5, 6-2 to win the championship!

As a team, Herkimer finished one point behind Broome CC in the closest regional tournament in recent years.  “I am very proud of these young women and the way they  represented our college,” said coach Katie Scanlon. “We could not have accomplished this feat without the support and patience of the faculty, staff and administration."
