Photograph from Herkimer College Collection to be Sold at AuctionCindy Sherman

The Herkimer County College Foundation will benefit from the sale of an exclusive Cindy Sherman photograph this fall. The print, named “Untitled Film Still #39” is part of a series of 60 photographs taken by Sherman of herself in the 1970’s. The Museum of Modern Art had the complete series on display in 2012. The print is one of only 10 in existence and its worth is estimated between $80,000 and $120,000, though it could sell for much higher. The print will be auctioned by Keno Auctions on Wednesday, October 1, 2014.

Founded in 2009 by Leigh Keno ‘77, Keno Auctions is a premier full-service auction house located on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, offering fine art, furniture, decorative arts, Asian works of art, jewelry and a variety of specialty categories for sale. Keno is donating his services to prepare the print for auction and is also reducing his commission on the sale in order to further benefit the Foundation. Originally from Mohawk, NY, Keno and his twin brother Leslie, as well a third brother Mitchell, are Herkimer College graduates. Leigh and Leslie were inducted to the Herkimer College Alumni Hall of Honor in 2000. The brothers are more widely known as furniture appraisers on the PBS series Antiques Roadshow  and hosts of the WGBH series Find! and the reality show, Buried Treasure, on the Fox network.

Recently retired art professor Bruce Schwabach discovered the print in the College Foundation art collection about 10 years ago. At the time, the print was worth a modest amount, but in recent years, its value has increased substantially. Cindy Sherman is widely recognized as one of the most important influential artists in contemporary art. Working as her own model for more than 30 years, Sherman has captured herself in a range of guises and personas.

“This print was a great find in our collection, and its sale will allow the Foundation to increase its endowment and to ultimately help fund more student scholarships. We are grateful to Leigh Keno for his assistance and generosity,” said Robert Fowler, executive director of the Herkimer County College Foundation.
