Campus Lecture Series:  “The Negro Baseball Leagues” Events RSS Feed

February 03, 2010 at 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Location: CC 288

Sponsored by the Diversity Committee.  Thomas Barthel, Associate Professor of English, presents “The Negro Baseball Leagues.” Barthel will discuss the history of the leagues and how the leagues were businesses run by African Americans, for African American customers, with African American players, coaches and managers at both the major and minor league levels. He illustrates how, beginning in the 1920’s, the leagues parallel the rise in black consciousness as best exemplified by the Harlem Renaissance.  Barthel has published several books, most recently, Baseball’s Peerless Semi-pros: The Brooklyn Bushwicks of Dexter Park. Additionally, Barthel had an article on General Abner Doubleday run in Memories and Dreams, the official, members-only magazine of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, NY.
