As you plan your transition to community college, you will probably have many questions. Below is a list of housing questions frequently asked by Herkimer College students planning to live off or on campus:

Where is the student housing contract?

What if Herkimer runs out of housing / apartments?

If housing is full at Herkimer, we encourage you to call and ask that your name is added to the waiting list.

Unfortunately, this will not guarantee you a spot, here is a list of off-campus locations that are available.


Does Herkimer offer off-campus housing?

We do not have off-campus housing, but do keep a list of participating land lords that offer housing


What if I have other questions?

You may contact your RA or Area Coordinator with questions regarding this process. You can also get answers to your questions at the Office of Residence Life & Housing in Campus Meadows or by giving us a call at 315 867-2222.


What items should I leave at home?

Please do not bring the following items:

  • Candles
  • Incense
  • Halogen Lamps
  • Fireworks
  • Air Conditioners
  • Live Christmas Trees
  • Pets
  • Weightlifting Apparatus
  • BBQ Grills
  • Foreman Grill, etc.
  • Gasoline/Other flammable liquids
  • Cinder Blocks
  • Drugs/Alcohol/Kegs/Beer Balls
  • Decorative or Empty alcohol containers
  • Exterior Mounted Antennas
  • Duct Tape
  • Extension Cords
  • Drum Sets/Electric Guitars/Amplified Equipment
  • Firearms (including Paintball guns, BB/Pellet guns, etc. See License for further description)

What items should I bring?

When speaking with your roommate/apartment-mates, you need to discuss which of the following items you should bring, which others might have, and which items you can share.

You also should consult your home owners insurance to see if your policy will cover items that are lost, stolen and/or damaged while you are at college. Otherwise, you might want to contact your insurance agent about purchasing renters insurance.

Acceptable things you might want to bring include:

  • Bedroom:
    Sheets, Pillow, Pillow Case, Blanket & Comforter

  • Vehicle:
    If you will be bringing a vehicle, make sure that you have the proper equipment such as jumper cables, safety equipment, and a shovel. The $80 ($50 for Spring only) parking fee will be due at check-in.

Can I get my deposit back if I change my mind?

All housing contract cancellations must be submitted in writing to the Residence Life & Housing Office and received by the due date. Students canceling this agreement on or before July 1 for the fall semester or December 15 for the spring semester will receive a full refund of the Security Deposit. Any cancellation after July 1 for the fall semester and December 15 for the spring semester, will result in forfeiture of the Security Deposit.


Can you make room changes after selection?

No changes will be allowed after you have selected your room. If there are extenuating circumstances, you must submit a letter to the Office of Residence Life & Housing stating the reason that a change is necessary. The specific change request must be included in the letter. You will be contacted if your request for a change is granted.


What if I don’t have time for room selection or it doesn’t fit my schedule?

Do not miss a class to participate in Room Selection!! If there are any steps of the room selection process that you will be unable to complete due to work, class, etc., you may have someone participate for you. Simply pick up and complete a “Proxy Form” which is available at the Office of Residence Life & Housing. If you do not fill out a proxy form, a room cannot be chosen in your absence. The person you have choose your room at Room Selection Night must have the proxy form with them in order to select for you.


What are the options for residence halls?

  • Reservoir Run - Same sex by apartment. Four-person suite apartments with single bedrooms. Mail delivery in building. Washer & Dryer in each apartment. Kitchen appliances including microwave.
  • Campus Meadows - Same sex by apartment. Mix of flats and townhouse apartments for 2 to 5students. Laundry room and mail boxes in complex. Kitchen appliances minus a microwave included.
  • College Hill - Same sex by apartment. Mix of single and double room apartments for 2 or 3 students. Laundry room and mail boxes in complex. Kitchen appliances minus a microwave included.

What is room selection?

Room selection is the process whereby students currently living on campus select on-campus housing for the 2014-2015 academic year. The housing selection process is based on the principles of seniority, fairness, and personal choice. Students select their roommates and then select their room according to a total point total.
