New York State Mesonet Early Warning Weather Detection System at Herkimer College

The Herkimer County Community College campus is home to a new weather station that provides real-time data to be used for forecasting and decision making.

Established in January 2014, the New York State (NYS) Mesonet Early Warning Weather Detection System is a new advanced, statewide weather station network that provides unprecedented weather information. This network is the first of its kind in New York and will consist of 125 standard meteorological stations and 17 enhanced stations throughout the state.

Herkimer College is a standard site consisting of a tower measuring 33 feet in height, measuring surface temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, precipitation, solar radiation, atmospheric pressure, and soil moisture and temperature at three depths. The data will be collected, archived, and processed in real-time, feeding weather prediction models and decision-support tools for users across the greater New York region.

The NYS Mesonet promises a new generation of local weather observations that will support more accurate, more precise decision-making in agriculture, emergency management, energy, ground transportation and aviation. The network will also provide excellent opportunities for educational engagement at all levels. Services.

The NYS Mesonet is designed, implemented and operated by scientists at the University at Albany with support from the NYS Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services. For more information, visit http://nysmesonet.org/.
