Engineering Science Program Accepting Students for Fall 2014

Herkimer, NY—Herkimer County Community College has received approval from the State Education Department to offer an Engineering Science program. The associate in science degree program will prepare students for transfer to a four-year engineering program in mechanical, civil, electrical or environmental engineering.

The program is a transfer degree, with enrollment beginning in August 2014. The goals of this program are to provide students with the educational experiences and methods scientists use to explore natural phenomena and to employ appropriate experimental design, critical thinking and methodology to solve problems in engineering science. Courses include Engineering Science I and II, Calculus, Physics I and II, Statics, Dynamics and Strength of Materials.

Transfer agreements are in place with SUNY Binghamton and SUNYIT in Utica for graduates of Herkimer’s Engineering Science program. Herkimer also has an agreement with SUNYIT where students transfer to Herkimer from SUNYIT until they complete enough work to transfer back to SUNYIT for a bachelor’s degree.

Dean of Academic Affairs Michael Oriolo said, “There are many opportunities regionally for students entering the STEM field, particularly in engineering science. This is one of several new STEM programs at Herkimer to address the demands of the workforce.” Other new STEM programs recently introduced at Herkimer include Liberal Arts and Sciences: Mathematics, Computer Science, Quality Assurance and Mobile Applications Development.
