Baseball America features former Generals' standouts
HERKIMER, NY – Two former Herkimer College baseball players, Hassan Evans (Brooklyn, NY) and Joe Kuzia (Seymour, CT), were recognized in the “College Review” in the February 2014 edition of Baseball America, one of the premier baseball publications in the world.
Evans was named the #1 draft prospect for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. He was featured in the article, as his Delaware State Hornets are the favorite for their conference title. Evans hit .366 with eight doubles, three triples, and 15 stolen bases last year as a junior. His 97 mph fastball and improved command have him high on many teams’ draft boards. At Herkimer, Evans was named Herkimer Male Athlete of the Year (2012), All Conference, All Region and All-American.
Kuzia, a former pitcher for the Generals in 2012-13, was named as the sixth best draft prospect in the Big East Conference. Kuzia was a starting pitcher for two years at Herkimer, and stands at 6' 5" with a fastball in the 90-92 mph range. He worked 69 innings and won seven games with 70 strikeouts during his two years with the Generals. He is currently a pitcher for the St. Johns Red Storm and Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer.
"These two players are high character individuals who worked very hard in our program to set themselves up for this type of opportunity. I have been a fan of Baseball America for a long time and to see these guys mentioned by them is really a great indicator of where our program is and where we are headed," stated Herkimer Baseball Head Coach Jason Rathbun.
Baseball America magazine is published biweekly (with one double issue at the end of the year) and covers baseball at every level, with an emphasis on finding the best players in high school, college and the minors and tracking their progress.
