The Talich String Quartet
Friday, October 22, 2010
8:00pm
Sarkus-Busch Theater
For several decades, the Talich Quartet has been recognized internationally as one of Europe’s finest chamber ensembles, and as the embodiment of the great Czech musical tradition. Since its first tour of North America in 1987, when the Talich Quartet was heralded as "a national treasure," this quintessentially eastern-European ensemble won accolades for its subtle and elegant interpretations of the string quartet repertoire.
The Quartet was formed at the Prague Conservatory in 1964, and is named for the noted conductor and founder of the Czech Philharmonic, Vaclav Talich. Jon Talich Jr., the current first violinist, is the son of the Quartet’s founder. Recognized internationally as one of Europe’s finest ensembles, the Talich tours annually throughout Europe, Japan and North America, and has appeared in the Middle East, Australia and Indonesia.
Particularly noted for its performances of the great Czech composers (Dvorak, Janacek, Martinu and Smetana), the Talich has recorded many of their works on the Calliope label. The Quartet’s recent recordings of Janacek, Smetana and Schubert, as well as the complete Mendelssohn string quartets, have been consistently hailed by the likes of Strings, Gromophone, and The Strad as exceptional recordings.
