INDEXES & DATABASES

ART INDEX (1957 – present).    Lists articles on all aspects of art, including Greek, Hindu, and American mythology, antiquities, museums, and folklore.

HUMANITIES INDEX (1974 – present).  Lists articles on the humanities, including archaeology, classical studies, folklore, history, language, political criticism, performing arts, philosophy, religion and theology.

MLA INTERNATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY (1970 – 2001). Lists articles covering English, European, Asian, African, and South American language materials, linguistics, general literature and folklore.

ARTICLE FIRST (1990 – present). A FirstSearch database with many full-text articles covering the humanities, culture, and social science.

ECO (1995 – present).  A FirstSearch database with scholarly articles covering anthropology, history, literature, philosophy, political science, religion and social science. 

LITERATURE RESOURCE CENTER  Contains information from over 600 books, encyclopedias, and essay collections.  Includes biographies, bibliographies, and critical analyses of authors from ancient times to the present.

TALES ONLINE A full-text database of folktales, fairytales, myths of indigenous peoples, legends, sagas and fables of world cultures in collections.

AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGIST (1959 – present).  Articles are international in scope and cover archaeology, folklore, ethnology and linguistics.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC (1888 – present).  Articles cover human culture, mythology and history, also scientific discovery and the natural world.

Atlas of Classical History.  Ref G 1033 .A833 1985.  Maps of battles, trade routes, cities, industries, geographic features and sacred locations.  Many are featured in classical mythology.

Bulfinch’s Mythology.  (2nd Floor Circulating Collection.)  BL 310 .B82 1947.  Clear and readable interpretations of the stories of classical gods and goddesses, King Arthur, Beowulf, Robin Hood, as well as the legends surrounding Charlemagne.

Dictionary of All Scriptures and Myth.  Ref BL 603 .G3 1981.  A guide to more than 5,000 words and phrases of the sacred language which clearly defines many scriptures and myths.

Dictionary of Native American Mythology.  Ref E 98 .R3 G46 1992.  A selection of the distinctive stories, characters, themes, symbols and motifs from Native American cultures.

Encylopedia of Urban Legends.  Ref GR 105.34 .B78 2001.  Explores hundreds of international modern myths and discusses them from a scholarly perspective.

Encyclopedia of World Mythology.  Ref BL 311 .E5 1975.  Takes a look at the gods, ancestors, heroes, plants and animals of world mythology.

Funk and Wagnall’s Standard Dictionary of Folklore, Mythology, and Legend.  Ref. GR 35 .F82.  Includes folk stories and songs, supernatural beings, heros, and witches in their manifestations in various cultures.

Gods and Heroes:  A Quick Guide to the Occupations, Associations and Experiences of the Greek and Roman Gods and Heros.  Ref BL 727 .H30.

Illustrated Book of Signs & Symbols.  Ref AZ 108 .B78 1996.  Gives the meanings for symbols from all over the world and explores the origins of each symbol in art, religion, literature, psychology and folklore.

Important Symbols In Their Hebrew, Pagan & Christian Forms.  Ref BF 1623 .S9 H35 2003.  Describes the symbolic meanings of plants, animals, gemstones, numbers, geometrical forms, colors, supernatural beings, architecture, and classical mythology characters.

Man, Myth and Magic.  Ref BF 1407 .M34 1995.  A large set of illustrated volumes covering mythology, religion, superstition and ancient mysteries.

Medieval Folklore: An Encyclopedia of Myths, Legends, Tales, Beliefs, and Customs.  Ref GR 35 .M43 2000.  Presents the folklore of medieval Europe.

Way of the Animal Powers: Historical Atlas of World Mythology.  Ref.  BL 311 .C26.  Mythologies of prehistoric hunters and gatherers from various cultures.

INTERNET RESOURCES

 

Encyclopedia Mythica.    A free online encyclopedia with over 6,100 articles on every aspect of mythology from all cultures.  Features geneaology tables for heroes and gods, an image gallery, and pronunciation guide.

Bulfinch’s Mythology.    The full-text, illustrated, searchable version of Bulfinch’s Mythology, considered a standard source of information on classical and medieval European mythology.

Comparative Religion.com – Ancient Mythology.  Covers ancient Egyptian, Celtic, Roman, Meso-American, and Mesopotamian myths and legends.

Regional Folklore and Mythology.  This directory lists links to mythology web pages by cultural and geographic region.
