CITING PRINTED SOURCES - MLA STYLE
The following examples are based on the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6th ed. on reserve at the Circulation Desk. See this handbook for more examples and detailed information.
BOOKS
Author’s name. Title of Book. Name of any editor, translator, or compilier. Edition number. Volume number or number of volumes. Place of Publication: Publisher’s name, date.
- Book by a Single Author:
Denning, Troy. Tatooine Ghost. New York: Ballentine Books, 2003.
- Book by Two or Three Authors:
Bevel, Tom, and R. A. Gardner. Bloodstain Pattern Analysis: with an Introduction to Crime Scene Reconstruction. 2nd ed. Boca Raton, FL: CRC Press, 2002.
Marquart, James W., Sheldon Ekland Olson, and Johnathan R. Sorensen. The Rope, the Chair, and the Needle. Austin, TX: University of Texas, 1994.
- Book by More than Three Authors – use “et al.” after the first author’s name:
Paxton, Richard T., et al. Linear Systems Analysis. New York: McGraw, 1969.
- Book by a Corporate Author:
U.S. Bureau of the Census. Statistical Abstracts of the United States. 117th ed. Washington D.C.: GPO, 1997.
- Book with no Author – the title moves into the place of the author:
Herkimer County at 200. Herkimer, N.Y.: Herkimer County Historical Society, 1992.
- A Work (essay, poem, etc.) in an Anthology or other Book Collection – state the page numbers:
Keeler, Kathleen. “Arming Airline Pilots Will Protect U.S. Travelers.” The War On Terrorism: Opposing Viewpoints. Ed. Karen F. Balkin. Detroit, MI: Greenhaven Press, 2005. 169-84.
- An Entry or Article from an Encyclopedia, Dictionary, or other reference Book:
If there is no author, start with the title of the entry or article.
Stowe, Ray. “Al Capone.” Encyclopedia of Criminology. 2nd ed. Ed. C. O’Connor et al. Boston: Macmillian Press, 2005.
- A Multi-Volume Set of Books:
If you use one volume in a set, state the volume number after the editor(s). If no editor, state it after the title.
Davis, H. E. “Dollar Diplomacy.” Dictionary of American History. Ed. Jen Hein. Vol. 8. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1976.
If you use two or more volumes in a set, state the total number of volumes after the editor(s). If no editor, state it after the title.
“Mozart.” The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. Ed. Stanley Sadie. 20 vols. London: Macmillan, 1980.
PERIODICAL ARTICLES
JOURNAL ARTICLES:
Author’s name. “Title of Article.” Name of Periodical Volume number (Date of Publication): page number(s).
Kolani, Ruth. “Coetzee’s FOE.” The Explicator 63 (2004): 62-63.
- If each journal issue is page-numbered separately, state the volume number, add a period, and state the issue number.
Corson, David. “English Only and Social Justice.” TESOL Journal 8.3 (1999): 18-22.
MAGAZINE ARTICLES:
Author’s name. “Title of Article.” Name of Periodical Date of Publication: page number(s).
- If published weekly or bi-weekly, give the complete date but not the volume or issue numbers.
Hof, Robert D. “PayPal Spreads Its Wings.” BusinessWeek 23 May 2005: 105-106.
- If published monthly or less, give the month(s) and year but not the volume or issue numbers.
Hudson, Michael. “The $4.7 Trillion Pyramid.” Harper’s Magazine Apr. 2005: 35-40.
NEWSPAPER ARTICLES:
Author’s name. “Title of Article.” Name of Newspaper Date of Publication, edition: page number(s).
- If the pages skip to another section, add a + sign to the first page number. If there is more than edition one per day, give the edition name (natl. ed., city ed., late ed., extra ed.)
Gordon, Michael R. “Russia Votes, Like it or Not.” New York Times 21 Dec. 1999, late ed.: A1+.
- If the name of the town or city is not part of a paper’s title, add it in brackets. If it is a national paper, this is not needed.
Urich, Gerry A. “Generals Triumph.” The Evening Telegram [Herkimer] 16 May 2005: 15.
