CITING PRINTED SOURCES - APA STYLE
The following examples are based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th ed. on reserve at the Circulation Desk. See this manual for more examples and detailed information.
BOOKS
Author or Editor’s name. (year of publication). Title of book: Capitalize only the first letter of the title and subtitle, unless the words are proper nouns. Place of publication: Publisher’s name.
- Book with one author – if editor, use (Ed.). after the name:
Anheim, R. (Ed.). (1971). Art and visual perception. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press.
- Book with an edition number:
Matthews, Dawn D. (2000). Rehabilitation sourcebook (4th ed.). Detroit, MI: Omnigraphics.
- Republished book:
Conrad, Joseph. (1950). Heart of darkness. New York: New American Library. (Original work published 1902).
- Book with two to six authors or editors – use “&”:
Fest, L., Riecken, Harold, & Schacter, S. (Eds.). (1956). When prophecy fails. Minneapolis, MN: University of Minnesota Press.
- Book with more than six authors or editors – state the first six names then add “et al.”
Pedde, Lawrence D., Foote, Warren, Scott, LeRoy, King, Danny L., McGalliard, Judith, Larson, J.P., et al. (1994). Manual of metrics: A sourcebook for educators. Los Angeles: Pacific Press.
- Book by a corporate author – if the author and the publisher are the same, use “Author” as the name of the publisher:
U.S. Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation. (2003). Uniform crime reports for the United States.. Washington, DC: Author.
- Book with no author or editor:
Experimental psychology. (1938). New York: Holt.
Oxford dictionary of quotations (2nd ed.). (1973). London: Oxford University Press.
- A work in an anthology or other collection:
Rubenstein, J. P. & Mason, William. (1967). The effect of television violence on small children. In Television and juvenile psychological development (4th ed., pp. 112-134). New York: American Psychological Society.
- Entries and articles from single-volume encyclopedias, dictionaries, or other reference works:
Hamilton, Jill. (2004). Piglet’s big movie. In Christine Tomassini, Jim Craddock, & Michael J. Tyrkus (Eds.), Magill’s cinema annual 2004 (23rd ed., pp. 368-369). Detroit, MI: Gale Group.
- Entries and articles from multi-volume book sets:

PERIODICALS
Author’s Last Name, First Name. (Year, Month Day). Title of article: Capitalize only the first letter of the title and subtitle, unless the words are proper nouns. Title of Periodical, Volume number(Issue number, if each issue is paginated separately), page number(s).
JOURNAL, MAGAZINE, AND NEWSLETTER ARTICLES - Give as much information as you can find.
- Published weekly:
Kandel, E. R., & Squire, L. R. (2000, November 10). Neuroscience: Breaking down scientific barriers to the study of brain and mind. Science, 290, 1113-1120.
- Published monthly:
Chandler-Crisp, S. (1988, May). Aerobic writing: a writing practice model. Writing Lab, 4, 9-11.
- Published less than monthly:
Saywitz, K. J., Mannarino, Anna., Berliner, L., & Cohen, Jay. (2000). Treatment for sexually abused children and adolescents. American Psychologist, 55, 1040-1049.
- Journal paginated by issue – give the issue number in parentheses after the volume number:
Mason, Diana J. (2005, April). Surviving Social Security. American Journal of Nursing, 105(4), 11-12.
- Article with no author – move the title into the author’s place:
Mental illness in the emergency room. (2005, June). Harvard Mental Health Letter, 21, 7.
NEWSPAPERS – Give as much information as you can find.
- Daily newspaper – if no author, move the article title into the author’s place.
