Cogar Gallery Features Works of Alumnus Kathleen Deep
May 21, 2013

Herkimer County Community College’s Cogar Gallery will feature “Follow the Water,” Photographs of alumnus Kathleen Deep, ‘08, Ashford, CT from June 7-July 15, 2013 in the Cogar Gallery. An opening reception will be held Friday, June 7 from 7-9pm.

Kathleen Deep is a photographer from Upstate New York who continues to work in black & white film. She received her associate in applied science degree in photographic technology from Herkimer County Community College in 2008, and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. She then earned a bachelor in fine arts from Cazenovia College and in May 2013 graduated from the University of Connecticut with a M.F.A. in studio art specializing in photography with an art history minor, cum laude.

Deep’s work most recently has been exhibited at the Benton Museum in Storrs, CT, and at Sideshow Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. She currently lives and works in Connecticut. “I walk alone amongst the trees. I wade slowly and wait for the water to still,” she said. “By slowing my step and my seeing, I am more aware of my behaviors while wandering. I question what my connection is to the natural world, and where my comfort in silence and solitude derives from. The more I explore and photograph my surroundings; I develop an understanding of them. The more I understand, the closer I feel to becoming part of them,” Deep concluded.

The Cogar Gallery is located in the Hummel Corporate and Professional Education Center, at the main entrance to the McLaughlin College Center. It is open to the public free of charge Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. when the College is open. Visit online at http://www.herkimer.edu/cogar.

College Now Accreditation
May 07, 2013

Herkimer County Community College is among 13 colleges and universities that recently earned national accreditation or reaccreditation for concurrent enrollment programs. The National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) establishes an autonomous Accreditation Commission to assume responsibility for peer review.

Herkimer’s College Now program allows high school students to take college level courses taught by high school teachers in their high school, during the regular school day. The program is available in 15 high schools in Herkimer and Otsego Counties and in Herkimer County BOCES, with approximately 40 different courses offered. It was first accredited in 2006, and has now been reaccredited for seven academic years. College Now classes are taught by high school instructors who have been approved by HCCC as part-time faculty members at the College.

Outgoing NACEP Accreditation Committee Chair Becky Carter of Indiana University’s Advance College Project remarked: “I’m very pleased to welcome these 13 colleges and universities to the select group of 89 concurrent enrollment partnerships nationwide accredited through NACEP’s extensive peer-review process. They each demonstrated to their peers from other NACEP accredited programs that the college courses offered in high schools are of the same quality as courses offered on campus.”

By taking more rigorous courses in high school, students can learn early about the expectations of college while getting a head start on earning college credits. Herkimer’s College Now Specialist is Dr. Eric Vernold. Jonathan Bryant is Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, Adjuncts & College Now. Students may visit the College Now website at http://www.herkimer.edu/college_now or contact the College Now office at 315-866-0300 ext. 8743 for further information.

“Play to the Camera”—live on HCTV Channel 99, Postponed Until Wednesday, May 8
April 23, 2013

“Jason Davis & the New Philosophers” will take the stage at 9pm in the TV studio on the campus of Herkimer County Community College on Wednesday, May 8. Students enrolled in various media degree programs at HCCC will produce “Play to the Camera” live on HCTV channel 99.

The program has been rescheduled from Thursday, April 25 to Wednesday, May 8. Instructor of Radio-Television Broadcasting Douglas Flanagan says that the program is truly a cooperative effort. Jason Davis is the Instructor of Music Industry at HCCC, and the crew will consist of students in the various media programs including Radio-Television Broadcasting, Music Industry, Digital Filmmaking, and Communication Arts: New Media.

Flanagan says that “Play to the Camera” not only offers HCCC musicians a chance to perform on live television, but it also gives other media degree students experience in studio based video production. Students will be operating the studio cameras, video switcher, graphics systems, teleprompter, audio boards, and video server systems.
A live studio audience is needed. Interested audience members will be part of the live telecast. Seating is limited and will be offered on a first come-first served basis. Audience seating will open at approximately 8:30pm in the TV studio, room TC109.

Jason Davis, Assistant Professor of Music Industry at HCCC, said “Play to the Camera” is “a good cross pollination of music and media at HCCC. It covers it all “live sound, pre-production, promotion, and performance.” This is the fourth production, since the fall of 2012, of “Play to the Camera.”

The entire program will also be recorded live into HCCC’s Pro Tools and Avid Media Composer editing systems for later post-production. It will be uploaded to the HCCC Radio-Television YouTube channel and it will also run in encore presentations on HCTV Channel 99.

Generals Theater Group Presents “A Flea in Her Ear”
April 22, 2013

Herkimer County Community College’s Generals Theater Group will present A Flea in Her Ear, a farce written by Georges Feydeau and translated by David Ives. In this award winning play, Victor Chandebise, a young insurance executive, is suspected of having an affair. His wife, Raymonde, concocts an elaborate plot to entrap him at the shady, and suggestive, Frisky Puss hotel. At the Frisky Puss there is a drunken bellboy named Poche who looks exactly like Victor. After much chaos, confusion, mistaken identities, pistols, and a revolving bed, all involved flee back to the home of Victor Chandebise to, hopefully, sort out all the commotion and return to normal.

This “adults only” show will be held in the McLaughlin College Center’s Sarkus-Busch theater on Friday and Saturday, April 26 and 27 , at 7 pm. Performances are free and open to the public. The show is directed by senior Christina Carroll, Utica, a Liberal Arts & Sciences: General Studies major, with assistance from Matthew Powers, Generals Theater Group advisor and English Instructor.

Powers said the organization, in addition to bringing theatrical productions to the College and local community, provides students with hands-on experience in various roles including acting, directing, stage and house management. For questions about the show please contact Matthew Powers at 866-0300, extension 8636.
