SUNY Chancellor’s Awards
May 23, 2013
Three Herkimer County Community College employees are recipients of the prestigious SUNY Chancellor’s Award. The three were presented with the awards at the College’s recent commencement.
Sharon Gleasman-Howell ‘79, Professor of Physical Education, is the recipient of the 2013 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Faculty Service. Professor Gleasman-Howell has demonstrated 32 years of expertise in her devotion to the College: she teaches, coaches and volunteers. She is relentless in her commitment to HCCC. In her early years, Gleasman was one of two females in a very strongly male dominated field. She continued to be an excellent role model for other females who had the same career interests, long before numerous federal laws helped enforce equity in athletic programs. Gleasman-Howell has coached nine individual athletic National Champions and won two titles as track coach. She is a member of the inaugural class inducted into the College’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
She spends countless hours volunteering with different clubs and student-based organizations, all appreciated by the HCCC community. “Sharon has dedicated countless hours of work to students with disabilities so they can succeed on campus,” said President Ann Marie Murray. “I am proud to present this award to Professor Sharon Gleasman-Howell in recognition of her mastering teaching and coaching techniques that inspire her students.” She holds an A.S. from HCCC; a B.S. from the University of Rhode Island and an M.S. from SUNY Cortland.
Associate Dean of Continuing Education Linda Contino Lamb is the recipient of the 2013 SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service. Lamb has over 20 years of experience in Continuing Education and Online Learning. After 12 years in various roles in Herkimer’s Office of Continuing Education, she became the first Director of the Internet Academy, where she was able to work closely with faculty and returning adult students as they entered the online classroom. The Internet Academy currently supports 850 students who study exclusively on line each term.
Through Lamb’s efforts, a Teaching and Learning Collaborative (TLC) was developed to promote excellence in teaching and support the HCCC community of faculty. In its first year, the TLC offered 45 sessions for faculty on various topics. She was named Associate Dean of Continuing Education in 2005 and oversees the Internet Academy, TLC, Office of Community Education, College Now Concurrent Enrollment Program and the Office of Adjunct instruction. Dr. Murray said, “Congratulations, Linda, in receiving the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service for your strong commitment to this institution. I am proud to present you with this award.” Lamb holds a B.S. from Alfred University and an M.S. from SUNY at Buffalo.
Bonnie Wezalis ‘92 is the recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service. An Office Assistant II in the Humanities/Social Science Division, Bonnie began her employment at HCCC in 1992 as a part-time Secretary in the President’s Office. She became a full-time Stenographer in the President’s Office in 1995. Besides her general office work, she performed duties for the college attorney, Director of Institutional Research and Assistant to the President.
Wezalis became the Office Assistant in the Humanities/Social Science Division in 2003. She continuously demonstrates excellence in performing her job duties. “She’s both professional and courteous in assisting faculty, staff and students. Aside from being exceptional in every aspect of her job description, her enthusiasm, energy and gregariousness far transcend the requirements of her position. Bonnie continually goes above and beyond all endeavors she encounters. I am proud to present Bonnie Wezalis with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service,” said Dr. Murray. Wezalis hold an A.A.S. degree from Herkimer County Community College.
The recipients each received a Chancellor’s Award medallion from the State University of New York. Their names will be included on a plaque in the lobby of the McLaughlin College Center.
Cogar Gallery Features Works of Alumnus Kathleen Deep
May 21, 2013
Herkimer County Community College’s Cogar Gallery will feature “Follow the Water,” Photographs of alumnus Kathleen Deep, ‘08, Ashford, CT from June 7-July 15, 2013 in the Cogar Gallery. An opening reception will be held Friday, June 7 from 7-9pm.
Kathleen Deep is a photographer from Upstate New York who continues to work in black & white film. She received her associate in applied science degree in photographic technology from Herkimer County Community College in 2008, and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. She then earned a bachelor in fine arts from Cazenovia College and in May 2013 graduated from the University of Connecticut with a M.F.A. in studio art specializing in photography with an art history minor, cum laude.
Deep’s work most recently has been exhibited at the Benton Museum in Storrs, CT, and at Sideshow Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. She currently lives and works in Connecticut. “I walk alone amongst the trees. I wade slowly and wait for the water to still,” she said. “By slowing my step and my seeing, I am more aware of my behaviors while wandering. I question what my connection is to the natural world, and where my comfort in silence and solitude derives from. The more I explore and photograph my surroundings; I develop an understanding of them. The more I understand, the closer I feel to becoming part of them,” Deep concluded.
The Cogar Gallery is located in the Hummel Corporate and Professional Education Center, at the main entrance to the McLaughlin College Center. It is open to the public free of charge Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. when the College is open. Visit online at http://www.herkimer.edu/cogar.

College Now Accreditation
May 07, 2013
Herkimer County Community College is among 13 colleges and universities that recently earned national accreditation or reaccreditation for concurrent enrollment programs. The National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships (NACEP) establishes an autonomous Accreditation Commission to assume responsibility for peer review.
Herkimer’s College Now program allows high school students to take college level courses taught by high school teachers in their high school, during the regular school day. The program is available in 15 high schools in Herkimer and Otsego Counties and in Herkimer County BOCES, with approximately 40 different courses offered. It was first accredited in 2006, and has now been reaccredited for seven academic years. College Now classes are taught by high school instructors who have been approved by HCCC as part-time faculty members at the College.
Outgoing NACEP Accreditation Committee Chair Becky Carter of Indiana University’s Advance College Project remarked: “I’m very pleased to welcome these 13 colleges and universities to the select group of 89 concurrent enrollment partnerships nationwide accredited through NACEP’s extensive peer-review process. They each demonstrated to their peers from other NACEP accredited programs that the college courses offered in high schools are of the same quality as courses offered on campus.”
By taking more rigorous courses in high school, students can learn early about the expectations of college while getting a head start on earning college credits. Herkimer’s College Now Specialist is Dr. Eric Vernold. Jonathan Bryant is Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, Adjuncts & College Now. Students may visit the College Now website at http://www.herkimer.edu/college_now or contact the College Now office at 315-866-0300 ext. 8743 for further information.

Recipients of this year’s award have an overall grade point average of 3.8 and records of significant contributions to their campuses and communities. SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher presented the awards at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center.
Abby Black, a Liberal Arts & Sciences: Social Science major, is captain of the Women’s Softball Team and is a first team All-American, All-Region, and All-Conference selection. Physical Therapist Assistant major Shane Delameter is president of the Physical Therapy Assistant Club. He was the assistant head coach for Little League Baseball and volunteers at various campus events.
“The students we honor today have strong records of achievement as student leaders, scholar athletes, aspiring artists, and community volunteers,” said Chancellor Zimpher. “By exhibiting excellence in class, on campus, and in their local communities, these students truly represent the power of SUNY and we honor them with great pride. Congratulations to all the students being recognized today.”
The Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence was created in 1997 to recognize students who have best demonstrated, and have been recognized for, the integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement.
Each year, campus presidents establish a selection committee, which reviews exemplary students. Nominees are then forwarded to the Chancellor’s Office and are subject to a second round of review. Finalists are then recommended to the Chancellor to become recipients of the award. Each recipient receives a framed certificate and medallion, which is traditionally worn at commencement.

Nancy Kelly Jazz Concert
April 08, 2013
Herkimer County Community College’s WVHC Radio is sponsoring a concert with legendary jazz performer Nancy Kelly, Thursday, April 18 from 7-9 p.m. in the McLaughlin College Center amphitheater, room 288 of the Hummel Corporate and Professional Education Center.
Nancy Kelly has earned many awards and enlisted fans from around the globe. In a market place where wispy voices and shallow emotions abound, Kelly is a breath of fresh air; she takes us back to the time when jazz - and that includes vocal jazz—was an authentic expression of real emotion.
Kelly’s refined stage presence, style, and the ability to quickly capture the emotions of her audience aren’t the only things that place her in a league of her own. Her vocal style is a study in phrasing, style and swing. She’s both old school and new. She’s experienced, yet her delivery and ideas are fresh. She can take a song and turn it up or down, and leave you believing that it was meant to be exactly that way.
Starting at age four in her hometown of Rochester, New York, Kelly studied piano, clarinet, drama and dance with private instructors, and voice at the Eastman School of Music. During her thirty-plus year career she has honed her trademark swing/bop style in front of audiences across the U.S. and abroad—from Singapore to Switzerland, France and Turkey to her three tours of Japan. She appears regularly in New York City including performances at The Blue Note, Birdland, The Rainbow Room and Lincoln Center. She works frequently in Los Angeles and Miami, as well as countless jazz clubs, festivals and symphony orchestra engagements across the country.
Kelly was twice named “Best Female Jazz Vocalist” in the Down Beat Readers’ Poll. She has recorded four critically acclaimed CDs, Her first CD “Live Jazz” reached #11 on the Billboard charts. “Born to Swing” and her latest CD “Well Alright” feature guest tenor saxophonist Houston Person.
Tickets are $10 and may be purchased at the door. Students and millennium card-holders will be admitted free.

Coach Matt Lee said, “Jon’s leadership and determination has led us to our third place finish in the Country and Number One in Region III. He is turning into a very versatile player,” Coach Lee added. “We are expecting big things from him in the future.”
The Female Athlete of the Month is Women’s Lacrosse player Ariel Montes, a Liberals Arts & Sciences: General Studies major from New Rochelle, NY. Coach Dianna Ste-Marie said “Ariel had nine goals, three assists, 23 ground balls and 14 draw controls in three games. She is dominant when it comes to draw controls and ground balls. Ariel works very hard at all times. She pushes herself for the good of the team in all games and practices even while fighting injuries. She is an all-around player, making it easy to put her anywhere on the field with confidence,” Ste-Marie concluded.
HCCC’s Green and Gold Club honors an outstanding male and female athlete each month.

“Play to the Camera”—live on HCTV Channel 99 on Friday, March 29
March 27, 2013
“The Plastic Faction” will take the stage at 8:00pm in the TV studio on the campus of Herkimer County Community College on Friday, March 29. Students enrolled in various media degree programs at HCCC will produce “Play to the Camera” live on HCTV channel 99.
Instructor of Radio-Television Broadcasting Douglas Flanagan says that the program is truly a cooperative effort. The Plastic Faction’s drummer is Dave Glantz, a current Radio-Television Broadcasting major, and the crew will consist of students in the various media programs including Radio-Television Broadcasting, Music Industry, Digital Filmmaking, and Communication Arts: New Media.
Flanagan says that “Play to the Camera” not only offers HCCC musicians a chance to perform on live television, but it also gives other media degree students experience in studio based video production. Students will be operating the studio cameras, video switcher, graphics systems, teleprompter, audio boards, and video server systems.
A live studio audience is needed. Interested audience members will be part of the live telecast. Seating is limited and will be offered on a first come-first served basis. Audience seating will open at approximately 7:30pm in the TV studio, room TC109.
Jason Davis, Assistant Professor of Music Industry at HCCC, says “Play to the Camera” is “a good cross pollination of music and media at HCCC. It covers it all-“live sound, pre-production, promotion, and performance.” This is the third production of “Play to the Camera.” In March, the show featured acoustic performer “Billy Mucha” (Music Industry major) and “Zach and Mary” (Mary Dziekowicz Music Industry Major). “The Birdseed Bandits,” with three of the four members being former or current Music Industry students performed on the first show in November 2012.
The entire program will also be recorded live into HCCC’s Pro Tools and Avid Media Composer editing systems for later post production. It will be uploaded to the HCCC Radio-Television YouTube channel and it will also run in encore presentations on HCTV Channel 99.

HCCC to Standardize Financial Aid Award Letter
February 22, 2013
Herkimer County Community College is joining with the other 64 State University of New York campuses to adopt a standardized financial aid award letter as part of the SUNY Smart Track™ campaign, SUNY’s broader commitment to transparency in college financing. The new letter will allow students and their families to see clearly the cost of attendance and financial aid offerings at each campus, including campus-specific information.
“We applaud Chancellor Zimpher’s effort to make the financial aid process easier for students and their families, and we are pleased to do our part in supporting initiatives that promote transparency and access” said HCCC President Ann Marie Murray.
Development of the standard financial aid award letter was first announced when SUNY launched its Smart Track™ campaign in September. With the launch, SUNY adopted the concept of transparency of financial aid and college costs and the system began offering students the most proactive, comprehensive financial aid information and services in the country.
More recently, in the 2013 State of the University Address, Chancellor Zimpher announced that SUNY Smart Track™ would contribute to a wider system-wide goal of decreasing the loan default rate of SUNY students by at least five percent over the next five years.
The SUNY Smart Track™ Award Letter was developed by a committee of campus Financial Aid Directors, and others, who were tasked with adopting the intent of the federal Financial Aid Shopping Sheet while creating a unique version for SUNY. Additionally, the campaign calls for an expansion of SUNY’s Student Loan Service Center, early engagement of students at risk of default, and providing new and improved online resources such as a net price calculator, chats with financial aid experts, and financial literacy materials.

He has also become a contributing member of our men’s relay teams. It has been a pleasure to coach David and watch him realize his potential.”
The Female Athlete of the Month is Samantha Randio, Women’s Basketball, New Baltimore, NY. A Business: Sports & Recreation Management student, Randio has scored 9.8 points per game, and 5.4 rebounds per game. Coach Bradley Gouger said “Sam has really been one of our key players this semester. She has scored in double figures in seven games since the break. One of the keys to our defense, she is very active in the top of the press and leads to a lot of deflections/steals for us. Sam has really progressed throughout the season.”
