HCCC Club to Dedicate Lilac Bush in Memory of Holocaust Victims
May 11, 2010
Herkimer County Community College’s Women’s Club will plant and dedicate a lilac bush in memory of victims of the Holocaust during World War II.
The idea for the dedication was inspired by Helen Sperling of Utica. Sperling presented at the College in April, recounting her childhood memories of the Holocaust. She spoke about the Nazi officer who took over her family’s home and dug up her father’s beloved lilac bushes to have them sent back to his estate in Germany.
The planting and dedication will take place on Tuesday, May 18 at 4:30 p.m. near the entrance to the Technology Building. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Jane Verri at 866-0300, ext. 8648.
HCCC’s Women’s Club works toward empowering the women and men of the campus and community by allowing them to have a voice. The main goal of the club is to make a difference at HCCC, not only for current students, but also for future students and generations.
