Professor Published in Women’s Studies Journal
January 28, 2010
Herkimer County Community College Assistant Professor of English Lisa Elwood-Farber has had a paper accepted for publication in Women’s Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal. Her submission is entitled “Harriet Wilson’s Our Nig: A Look at the Historical Significance of a Novel that Exposes a Century’s Worth of Hypocritical Ideology.”
Our Nig is claimed to be the first known novel written by an African American in the United States. Harriet Wilson wrote it around the year 1859, yet the book has been buried and forgotten for over a century. Most critics believe that it was unpopular because it critiqued northern racism, instead of unveiling the horrors of slavery in the South. It calls to attention a set of assumptions that support notions of what it means to be black or white. In nineteenth century white America, there were certain ideologies that contributed to notions of race that white people used as an excuse to oppress black Americans.
Elwood-Farber’s paper explores Wilson’s portrayal of northern white racism and the deeply rooted assumptions of race. While using two genres, the famous slave narrative and the sentimental novel, Harriet Wilson challenges the racist ideology of 19th century America.
Elwood-Farber holds a bachelor’s degree from Marymount College and a master’s from New Mexico State University, where she focused on women’s literature and race theory. She was appointed to the HCCC faculty in 2003.

Anadio’s coaching experience includes time with the Little Falls Miners and as an assistant coach with the HCCC baseball program. He recently was appointed head coach of the HCCC softball team.
Campers should bring their own bats and gear and athletic attire. Sneakers are required. The cost is $60 for the six-week clinic or $15 per individual session. Participating in the entire six-week clinic is recommended for proper instruction and overall camper success. Campers participating in the post-camp pizza party will be subject to an additional $10 charge to cover food and drink. For more information or to register, contact Anadio at (518) 848-6693 or peter.anadio@herkimer.edu.

December 08, 2009
Herkimer County Community College will hold a local conversation with HCCC’s four representatives to the SUNY Strategic Planning Initiative on Monday, December 14 at 3:00 p.m. in the Library Reading Room, located on the second floor of the Library Complex. This event is intended to keep the larger SUNY community aware of and informed about SUNY’s strategic planning process, and will be followed by a final local conversation in mid-spring. Campus constituents and members of the public are invited to hear about the progress of the process and hear from HCCC’s representatives in the “group of 200.” The representatives are Nicholas F. Laino, Vice President for Administration and Finance; William Pelz, Professor; Rick Sebastian, Human Technologies Corporation; and Dr. Renee Scialdo-Shevat, Herkimer Diamond Mines. They will recount the outcomes of the first three of seven conversations held across the state covering the topics of economic vitality and quality of life, education pipeline and arts and culture.
The “group of 200” is charged with elaborating, through thoughtful debate and exchange of ideas, the guiding themes that will determine the future direction of SUNY. Those themes, initially identified through SUNY Chancellor Zimpher’s 64-campus tour, describe the areas in which SUNY will have a significant positive impact on economic vitality and quality of life throughout the State of New York.
The resulting strategic plan will guide SUNY for the next five years and advise SUNY in its development for the next ten years. This ambitious statewide collaborative planning process includes gathering observations, suggestions, ideas and comments, and engaging many stakeholders through campus visits, town hall meetings, and other outreach.
The local conversation at HCCC is free and open to the public.

Men’s Basketball Teams Visit Students at West Canada Valley School
November 30, 2009
Members of Herkimer County Community College’s men’s and women’s basketball teams visited middle and elementary students at West Canada Valley Central School on Wednesday, November 18.
The visit was part of a community outreach effort spearheaded by HCCC Director of Athletics Don Dutcher, Men’s Basketball Coach Matt Lee, Women’s Basketball Coach John Campagna and West Canada Valley Principals Frank Sutliff and Ann Maher. Dutcher said, “Our goal is to help students at local primary schools realize that now is the time to start their study habits, respect their school, friends, teachers, parents and self.”
The HCCC staff led a morning program for students in kindergarten through second grade with calisthenics, light exercises and a question and answer session. Coaches and student-athletes demonstrated key elements of the basketball game to 120 middle school students who were then divided up into groups to hone and develop their basketball skills. Members of the high school and college basketball teams discussed what it takes to make it at the college level as a student-athlete. The value of a college education and the commitment it takes to succeed on the basketball court and in the classroom were emphasized. The day concluded with the coaches and their teams visiting kindergarten through fourth grade classes. The student-athletes read to the students and participated in question and answer sessions in each classroom. One lucky class got to make turkey hats.
Throughout the visit, the most common theme was academics. Dutcher stressed, “It starts now for you. Do well in school and respect everyone helping you achieve each and every personal goal you have. Every day you wake up, set a new goal to do better than the day before in school, at home, on the basketball court and for yourself.”
Dutcher said, “This was a win-win situation for Herkimer County Community College and West Canada Valley Central Schools. It was a great opportunity for our student-athletes to give back to the community. If we influenced one student to improve their academic achievement and respect for school and athletics, our visit was well worth it.”
A second visit to West Canada Valley is being planned for the spring.

VanDusen is a former member of the Herkimer County Legislature, where for over 30 years he served as a tireless supporter of HCCC. VanDusen secured resources for the growth of the college through his work with regional development organizations and the state of New York.
This group brings the total number of Torchbearer Award recipients to 19. Previous recipients of the award are: Dr. James Anderson, Robert Boyle, Anthony Cosentino, Bess Cristman, Dr. Joseph P. DeLorenzo, Dr. Donald Gavagan, Col. James G. Hill, Virgil E. Johnson, Richard Jorrey, Frederick Juer, Harold Luther, Robert McLaughlin, Frank J. Menapace, Jean E. Stapleton and Dr. H. David Trautlein.
The award recipients were each honored with a plaque on the Torchbearer’s wall in HCCC’s Robert McLaughlin College Center lobby. The program included remarks by NYS Senator James L. Seward, NYS Assemblyman Marc W. Butler, HCCC Chairman of the Board of Trustees Donald J. Snyder, HCCC President Ann Marie Murray and HCC Foundation President Robert E. Brenchley.
Senator Seward said “It’s a great night to celebrate the college and four individuals who contributed so much.” Seward presented special certificates from the New York State Senate to each of the honorees, and Assemblyman Butler presented certificates from the New York State Assembly.
In accepting his award, Dr. Dorrance said, “It was a great experience to be involved in the beginning during the development of HCCC. Teaching biology was my job and my passion.” Dorrance talked about his former students, many of whom continued their educations and are working in various biological fields. “I am very proud of them,” he said.
Mary Ann McLaughlin accepted the award on behalf of her mother, Grace McLaughlin, and said, “We are really honored and grateful for this recognition of our mother.” She reminisced of her childhood and how her mother, who began the annual Herkimer County Arts and Crafts Fair, would immerse herself and the family in the details. Grace McLaughlin is the wife of the college’s first president Robert McLaughlin. “We used to say, anything that made the college more efficient was my father’s idea, and anything that added grace and warmth and charm was my mother’s,” she said. Many members of the audience chuckled and nodded in agreement.
“This is an unexpected honor, and I accept this award on behalf of all student services workers who have followed me,” said John Thayer. Speaking of the early years of the College, Thayer said, “We had many challenges, and achieved them, one by one, day by day.”
Robert VanDusen recalled how the college started out in rented space. He said, ”Today you have the most beautiful facility in New York State, and perhaps in the country.” He discussed the financial and operational success of the college saying, “I admire the way this college has been managed and you all should be proud of your operation.”
“I am truly humbled and grateful when I pass this wall,” said Donald Snyder, Chairman of the Board of Trustees. “You each must have HCCC in your souls.” President Ann Marie Murray concluded the unveiling ceremony by saying, “This tribute will remind students, faculty, staff and visitors of their contributions each time they walk past this wall. These were the ones who had Herkimer County Community College “in their bones.” They chose to spend their time and energy on making the campus what it is today, and in making that choice they created a place of promise and pride for those who have spent their careers within these walls, those whose public service allows us to continue, those who contribute to the Foundation knowing the impact of their support, for those of us who work here today and for almost 19,000 students who have had the privilege of saying, “I graduated from HCCC.”
Nominations for the Torchbearer Award were solicited in the spring and reviewed by a nominations committee that included: Daniel Sargent, HCCC Assistant to the President; Donald J. Snyder, Esq., chair of the Board of Trustees; Timothy Dunn, HCCC alumnus and trustee; Judy Hummel, a former trustee; James Wallace, Herkimer County Administrator; and Dr. Joseph P. International Film Burman VJ Playing at HCCC
November 06, 2009
Herkimer County Community College will present the film Burma VJ at 6:30 p.m. on November 18 in the Sarkus-Busch Theater. This is one in a series of independent and international films being shown at HCCC.
A panel discussion on free speech and human rights will follow the showing of the film. The event is free and open to the public.
Burma VJ offers a unique insight into high-risk journalism and dissidence in a police state, while providing a thorough documentation of the historical and dramatic days of September 2007 when the Buddhist monks started marching. Anders Østergaard, the acclaimed filmmaker, goes beyond the occasional news clip and brings us close to the video journalists who deliver the footage from Burma. Though risking torture and life in jail, courageous young citizens of Burma live the essence of journalism as they insist on keeping up the flow of news from their closed country. Armed with small handycams the video journalists (VJs) stop at nothing to make their recordings from the streets of Rangoon. Their material is smuggled out of the country and broadcast back into Burma via satellite and offered as free usage for international media. The whole world has witnessed single event clips made by the VJs, but for the first time, their individual images have been carefully put together to tell a much bigger story.

Mohawk Valley’s Premier Arts and Crafts Event to Feature More Than 140 Artisans
October 30, 2009
The Mohawk Valley’s premier arts and crafts event, the Herkimer County Arts and Crafts Fair, will be held Saturday and Sunday, November 14 & 15 at Herkimer County Community College.
The fair is a juried show with many unique exhibitors from throughout the northeast. A juried exhibition is one in which artwork is submitted and judges choose which exhibits can enter. This ensures that each artist’s work be original and of top quality.
The fair will feature a diverse array of arts and crafts with artisans exhibiting jewelry, pottery, metal work, stained glass and more.
Beth Smith of the Adirondack Glassmith is among the 140 vendors at this year’s show. Smith returns to the show to sell her glass work year after year for a variety of reasons. She explains, “From a vendor’s point of view, it is the most well-organized craft fair in upstate NY. Shoppers can come in and browse for awhile, stop, sit down and get a bite of food and drink at the cafeteria, walk right out and continue shopping. Another bonus of this show, and something shoppers look for, is the juried competition within categories. Ribbons are awarded to the best in a wide variety of categories (look for the blue and yellow ribbons). As a vendor, this just inspires me all the more to come up with something very new, unique and exciting every year. The result is a delightful assortment of quality products handmade by talented crafters and artisans in a show skillfully managed by expert organizers…a great time for everyone!” says Smith.
Susy Quayle of Waterville, creator of Zookeys says, “Last year was my first year at the Herkimer County Arts & Crafts Fair and it was a wonderful experience. Highly organized with helpful volunteers! Friendly comfortable atmosphere! My Zookeys made many new friends!”
New to the show is Caroline Hayward of Luckalilly Ceramics in Sauquoit, NY. Hayward has been in business since December 2008 and has been working with ceramics since 2007. She said, “I have attended the fair as a customer in the past, and I am definitely looking forward to selling there for my first time this year. Meeting local customers face to face is the best part about selling at craft fairs. I’m thrilled to be a part of such an established and well-organized event!”
The Herkimer County Arts & Crafts Fair is sponsored by the Herkimer County College Foundation. Proceeds benefit student scholarships at HCCC.
Chairperson Jean E. Stapleton says, “On behalf of the Herkimer County College Foundation, I wish to thank the public for its loyal support during the past 32 fairs. This annual event has made it possible to award many scholarships to deserving students.”
The event runs from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $4. Plenty of free parking is available adjacent to the show, with easy access off NYS Thruway Exit 30. Food service is available and the venue is handicapped accessible throughout.

HCCC Soccer Teams Visit Students at Poland Central School
October 15, 2009
Members of Herkimer County Community College’s men’s and women’s soccer teams visited students in middle and elementary schools at Poland Central School on Friday, October 9.
The visit was part of a community outreach effort spearheaded by HCCC Director of Athletics and Poland Central School graduate, Donald Dutcher. Dutcher said, “Our goal is to help students at local primary schools realize that a quality college education is available in their own backyard.”
Men’s soccer coach Pepe Aragon and women’s soccer coach Amy Dommer led a presentation to middle school students during which they used their athletes to demonstrate key elements of the soccer game. After the presentation, students were able to meet and talk with the team members, including athletes from other countries, such as Brazil, England, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago. The international athletes shared with students the importance of soccer in their home countries and how they have adjusted to life in upstate New York. Additionally, the athletes emphasized the value of a college education and the commitment it takes to succeed on the soccer field and in the classroom.
Throughout the visit, the most common theme was academics. Dutcher stressed, “It starts now for you. Do well in school and respect everyone helping you achieve each and every personal goal you have. Every day you get up, set a new goal to do better than the day before in school, at home, on the soccer field and for yourself.”
The teams also participated in an informal practice session with first and second grade students. The students were led through a variety of soccer related activities, with a stress placed on sportsmanship.
Dutcher said, “This was a win-win situation for Herkimer County Community College and Poland Central School. It was a great opportunity for our student athletes to give back to the community. If we influenced one student to improve their academic achievement and respect for school and athletics, our visit was well worth it.”
A second visit to Poland Central School is planned for the spring, in which Herkimer student-athletes will read to elementary school students in their classrooms, demonstrate life fitness activities and offer tips on improving soccer skills.
