Herkimer County Community College’s Upsilon Epsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society recently received special commendation for fulfilling all requirements to be named a One Star Chapter.

Phi Theta Kappa’s Five Star Chapter Development Plan, which reflects the scholarly ideals of Phi Theta Kappa, serves as a blueprint for developing a strong chapter and improving student engagement on campus. The plan also guides chapters in enhancing strategies to recognize eligible students, providing significant personal and professional development opportunities for members and building a working relationship with the college administration by becoming active on campus and in the community. To achieve each level of the Five Star Plan, a chapter must complete specific requirements as set by Phi Theta Kappa. HCCC’s Upsilon Epsilon Chapter completed the first ten requirements to earn the One Star Chapter designation.

“We are proud of our Phi Theta Kappa students for their vision and hard work to obtain this designation,” said President Ann Marie Murray. “The experience of working toward and achieving this goal helps students develop leadership skills and become engaged citizens.”

Phi Theta Kappa is an International Honor Society which recognizes and encourages scholarship among two-year college students. Membership is limited to students who achieve a 3.5 cumulative average and accumulate 12 or more credit hours.

HCCC’s Upsilon Epsilon Chapter participated in several campus and community activities during the academic year including a park clean-up, collections for local area food pantries as well as approximately 1,000 books for Better World Books. Members also presented a Dr. Seuss book to each child as they graduated from the Herkimer County Community College Child Care Center.
