Herkimer County Community College recently planted and dedicated a lilac bush in memory of victims of the Holocaust during World War II. The dedication was inspired by Helen Sperling of Utica and made possible by HCCC’s Women’s Club. Sperling presented at the College in April, recounting her childhood memories of the Holocaust. She spoke about the Nazi officer who took over her family’s home and dug up her father’s beloved lilac bushes to have them sent back to his estate in Germany. The lilac bush is located at the entrance to the Physical Education Building and is marked “Always Remember Pinkus Kacenelenbogen & the Six Million.” The College’s Women’s Club works toward empowering the women and men of the campus and community by allowing them to have a voice.
