HCCC Swimming & Diving Team Competes at NJCAA Nationals

Members of the Herkimer County Community College men’s and women’s swimming and diving team recently competed in the 2010 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Championship meet at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, FL.
Senior Kasumi Fujii (Otaru-shi, Japan), HCCC’s only female competitor at the meet, finished the women’s 200 yard backstroke in 14th place.
HCCC’s men improved their team score by 17 points over last year’s national championship result, finishing the meet in 11th place overall. The men’s top finishes included eighth in the 200 yard freestyle relay, eighth in the 400 yard freestyle relay, 12th in the 800 yard freestyle relay and 11th in the 200 yard medley relay. The men’s swimmers competing at the meet were senior Scott Ledwith (Geneseo, NY), senior Joseph McGrath (Red Hood, NY), senior Christian Torgersen (Dover, NY) and freshman Greg Griffin (Dallas, TX).
Freshman Darin Spiry (Gloversville, NY), HCCC’s only diver competing in the meet, finished the men’s one meter springboard event in ninth place.
All six athletes will receive a College Swimming Coach’s Association of America (CSCAA) Honorable Mention All-American certificate for finishing in the top 16 of an event.
