JUMPSTART Program for New Students
July 12, 2011
Herkimer County Community College is offering a pilot JUMPSTART program for incoming freshmen this summer. JUMPSTART will include a quick introduction to academic resources, study skills, strategies, tips and tutors. Small group discussions facilitated by faculty and staff will encourage students to ask questions, think about their learning styles, and learn ways to be successful students. Although intended for academically at-risk students, the program is open to all new accepted students.
Interested students may attend on Thursday, July 28 or Tuesday, August 9 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Parent/guardian sessions will be offered while students participate in JUMPSTART. The program is free for all new HCCC students. Pre-registration is required by contacting 315-866-0300 ext. 8275 or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). The deadline for JUMPSTART reservations is July 21, 2011.
Associate Dean of Enrollment Robert Palmieri said, “We are encouraging student success by providing early intervention for at-risk students, promoting the use of support services, and helping students more fully understand the academic, social and financial responsibilities of college.”
JUMPSTART is one of several new initiatives designed to support student success at HCCC. The College has implemented a conditional acceptance policy for out-of-county applicants. Those applicants from outside Herkimer County with high school averages less than 75 or GEDs are required to complete a short questionnaire and participate in an admissions interview prior to acceptance. Other new strategies include the development of living and learning communities, a student mentoring program, specialized advisement, and an early academic warning system.
