Student Highlight

Scott Sterling, ’07, Ilion, NY, chose Herkimer for the transfer opportunities, as well as for the financial advantage. With an A.S. degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences: Science from Herkimer, Scott will attend SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry this fall to major in Natural Resources Management. "All of my credits are transferring, and I’ve saved a lot of money by coming to Herkimer," said Scott. As a student ambassador and a member of the Student Government Association, Faculty-Student Association, Outdoor Adventure Club and intercollegiate swimming team, Scott has found many ways to develop his leadership skills and make friends. "I have been involved in student orientation, planning events, and helping bring students concerns to the administration," said Scott. He also had the opportunity to swim competitively for the first time. "I am so glad I went out for the swim team. I even made it to nationals – who knew?!"

Tips for Students Starting College

Recent graduate Scott Sterling, of Ilion, offers the following tips to new students:

  1. Join a club and get involved in activities. It’s a great way to make friends with students who have the same interests.
  1. Visit professors during office hours. You'll get one-on-one time with your teachers.
  1. Take advantage of the many resources offered at HCCC--free tutoring, fitness center, computer labs, career planning services, the library, etc.
  1. Explore majors and decide what you’re really interested in. It’s better to find out before you transfer to a four-year school, so you don’t waste time and money by changing your major.
  1. Consider living on-campus. All of the on-campus housing options are very nice and convenient too!
  1. Take an online class. They offer a lot of flexibility and are great if you have a busy schedule of work and activities.

Generals Day - a day of Celebration and Recognition

Several recognition and award ceremonies were also held including the Phi Theta Kappa induction and Who’s Who and Athletic and Student Leadership awards ceremonies.

President Williams congratulates Catherine Ellis of Ilion for her receipt of the “Who’s Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges” award. Twenty-four HCCC students received the Who's Who award this spring. Students selected have earned at least 30 credits with a 3.0 or higher GPA and have been actively involved on-campus or in the community.
