Campus Safety and Security at HCCC
The goals of Campus Safety are to provide protection for all students, faculty, staff and visitors to HCCC, to safeguard all real and personal property, and to enforce College policies and regulations. Campus Safety Officers are trained in specific areas that concern the College environment. CPR, first aid, emergency response procedures, cultural diversity and sexual assault response are some of the topics included in the training. All HCCC Safety Officers comply with the licensing, registration, and training requirements of the New York State Security Guard Act.
Members of Campus Safety do have Peace Officer status, and therefore do have the power to make arrests on campus. Campus Safety has a cooperative working relationship with the Herkimer Police Department, Herkimer County Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement agencies to help maintain a safe campus atmosphere.

If an incident occurs that we believe may have an adverse impact upon the HCCC community, information will be distributed throughout the campus via hard copy posted alerts and internet web-site alerts that can be found on our HCCC safety/ security web page. Information concerning New York State convicted sex offenders residing in the Herkimer, NY area can be obtained by contacting the Director of Campus Safety; room CA 221. All inquiries must be made in writing.
A copy of the Herkimer County Community College campus crime statistics as reported annually to the U.S. Department of Education will be provided upon request by the Campus Safety Committee. Please direct all such requests to the Office of the Dean of Students at (315) 866-0300, ext. 8276. Information can also be obtained from the U.S. Department of Education website at http://ope.ed.gov/security/.
New and updated campus BLUE LIGHT emergency telephones are located in various locations on campus. They are marked by BLUE LIGHTS above the phone. Pushing a button inside the emergency telephone box immediately connects you to campus safety.
While Campus Safety is vigilant about keeping our community safe, there are precautions everyone can take to reduce opportunities for a crime to take place on the campus. Such precautions include the following:
- Report suspicious activities and persons immediately to Campus Safety at x-8616 or call 911. You can also use the anonymous tip line at silentwitness@herkimer.edu.
- Don’t let people you do not know into your apartments and rooms.
- Lock your doors at all times, even if you are only leaving for a few minutes.
- Become familiar where blue light emergency phones are in your area on campus and use them.
- If you need an escort when you are walking on campus, call Campus Safety at x-8616 and they will provide one to you.
- If there is an emergency at HCCC, all students will be notified via their Herkimer.edu accounts, campus monitors and on the home page of our web site at www.herkimer.edu.
OPERATION ID
HCCC Campus Safety invites students to participate in "Operation I.D."; a service whereby safety will engrave specific markings upon your personal property. Such items as laptops are popular items that are lost/ stolen. By marking your personal property increases the probability of safety recovering your property if it is reported missing. Contact safety at ext. 8616 for an appointment between the hours of 9:00 a.m.- 6:00 p.m. M-F.
HCCC Student Nighttime Auxiliary Program (SNAP)
HCCC Student Nighttime Auxiliary Program (SNAP) is a new initiative designed to provide additional eyes and ears for the Campus Safety department. College work-study and criminal justice students are available to provide students, faculty, staff and community members with a two-person walking escort on-campus. The service is available from 8:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. SNAP members also observe and report incidents that may require attention of an officer via portable radio directly. They do NOT initiate any type of security/safety actions aside from their observations/reports. SNAP members are easily identifiable because they wear red jackets and orange vests. Members of the campus community are encouraged to use SNAP during operational hours. To request a SNAP escort, call Campus Safety at ext. 8616. |
