Counseling

Drug & Alcohol
Counselors coordinate substance abuse awareness programs as well as counsel students who are experiencing problems with drug and/or alcohol misuse or abuse. Referrals to outside agencies are made as needed.
Personal
Counselors are available to assist students in dealing with their psychological and emotional concerns. Individual, couple and group services are offered; along with crisis counseling for those dealing with emergency issues. Outpatient referrals may be recommended to accommodate the needs and wishes of the student.
Career Development
The Career Center provides lifetime career development services for all HCCC students and alumni. A variety of programs are offered throughout the year on resumes, interviews, job search strategies and other career related topics. The Career Center also assists students and alumni who are looking for part-time or full-time jobs by sponsoring a number of on-campus recruitment programs including recruitment dates, part-time job fairs and career fairs. The Career Center also provides career counseling and planning.
Vocational
Students who are undecided as to their future vocation should see the Career Services Counselor in RMCC. Through the use of on-line assessments, the counselor will provide students with a greater awareness of vocations that seem compatible with their interests, values and abilities. Once a specific vocation is identified, the counselor can provide information regarding occupational titles, and assist the student in developing the appropriate educational plan for the desired occupation.
Transfer Services
Counseling and transfer resource material is available from the Transfer Counselor located in RMCC. Although some four-year colleges do accept transfer students who have a “C” average or 2.00 quality point index, many schools expect community college graduates to have a higher quality point index. Courses that are repeated in an attempt to raise a grade do not remove the original grade from the student’s permanent record.
A New York State resident who is a transfer from Herkimer County Community College and who possesses or will have an Associate in Arts
Degree or an Associate in Science Degree at the time of transfer is guaranteed an opportunity to continue his/her education on a full-time basis at a senior campus of the State University of New York. Potential transfer students should be familiar with application deadlines and meet with the Transfer Counselor.
NOTE: It is important that students planning to transfer to a four-year baccalaureate program select a program at HCCC that will most nearly meet the requirements of the receiving institution while satisfying degree requirements here. Transfer is dependent on the student’s accomplishments while at Herkimer County Community College.
Students planning to transfer should initiate contacts with potential receiving institutions as soon as possible and should maintain these contacts. The Transfer Counselor will provide assistance in their transfer plans. Each fall a Transfer College Day is held where four-year college representatives recruit our graduates.
It is the student’s responsibility to request transcripts from the College in completing his/her transfer applications. A final transcript must also be requested when a student decides upon the transfer.
Health Services

The Health Services office, located in the Physical Education Building, welcomes all students with or without an appointment. The Coordinator of Health Services (R.N.) is available to provide first aid and medical evaluations for health concerns. These services are free of charge.
A nurse practitioner is on duty once a week, and provides physicals, sick visits, medical evaluations and prescriptions if needed. Fees for the services of the nurse practitioner are usually covered by health insurance. The College does not offer health insurance; therefore students should be covered by family health insurance. The College does offer accident insurance.
Housing

Living on-campus helps students establish a sense of belonging, acquire critical thinking skills, make ethical decisions, and assume self-responsibility. The Residence Life & Housing staff support students in these endeavors and develop activities that complement and enhance their classroom experiences. The department also takes an active role in partnering with parents to ensure the overall development and academic success of each student.
