Peer Tutoring

This program offers an opportunity for a few selected, academically eligible students to gain valuable job experience by serving as a peer tutor to other HCCC students. Peer tutors are trained and mentored by the full-time tutorial specialists on staff. As an added bonus, peer tutors are eligible for the ExCel Scholarship, which is awarded annually to an outstanding Academic Support Center peer tutor. Peer tutor applications are available in the Academic Support Center anytime, and students will be asked to provide two references. Peer tutors are paid staff members averaging approximately five hours of tutoring per week during the academic semesters.

A Message from Korrin Nash '08

President, Peer Tutor Club

photo of Korrin NashMy name is Korrin Nash, and I am a senior here at Herkimer County Community College. Along with playing soccer and lacrosse for Herkimer, I spend a lot of my time working for the Academic Support Center, providing tutoring to fellow students. Last year, as part of my honors project, I worked on promoting tutoring services. This year, as part of my work-study position, I am continuing to work on promoting the tutoring aspect of the Academic Support Center. I also serve as the President of the Peer Tutor Club.

The Academic Support Center provides free tutoring to all students, by peer tutors as well as professionals employed by the College. The tutoring staff comes from many different ethnic backgrounds and a variety of academic programs. Tutoring is offered in most academic areas, from anatomy and physiology to English, and many different types of tutoring are available. For example, we can help you study for tests, midterms and finals; write and revise papers; give you a better understanding or grasp on a subject you don’t understand; work on projects; etc. To sum it up, we can generally assist students with anything related to school.

Sometime during the spring semester, the Academic Support Center will move to a new state-of-the-art office in the Library building which is currently undergoing major renovation and expansion. I encourage all students, regardless of academic major or skill level, to take advantage of the excellent tutoring services provided by the Academic Support Center.

To learn more about tutoring or to request assistance, you can email academicsupport@herkimer.edu or call ext. 8288.
