How many times have you heard the very encouraging words, your college experience is going to be "the time of your life?” The problem is that while that is true for some, it is not always the same for others. About 39 percent of college students nationwide experience a significant mental health issue, according to nonprofit group Active Minds. Active Minds, which has a chapter at Herkimer College, supports mental health awareness and education among students.

Juggling academics, a social life, job responsibilities, family duties, etc. can be rough on students. The Herkimer College Counseling Center provides crucial relief and respite for students in need. For more serious cases, personal counselors work closely with mental health service providers throughout the greater Herkimer community to seamlessly help students get adequate treatment and support.

In addition to one-on-one services, the Counseling Center also has regular group therapy sessions for a variety of topics, such as grief support and anger management. In the spirit of reducing the stigma surrounding mental health issues on campus, the Counseling Center also offers on-campus suicide prevention and alcohol intervention trainings for students, equipping them with the skills necessary to have tough, but lifesaving, conversations with their peers.
