Point of Pride #9 - The Cogar Gallery
The Cogar Gallery is host to several local, regional and national art exhibitions throughout the year. The Cogar Gallery provides a wonderful opportunity for our students, employees, visitors and community members to regularly enjoy a variety of fine art exhibits. It also serves as an ideal location for a variety of receptions, meetings and other events.
George Cogar was a Herkimer County citizen who was instrumental in the founding of Mohawk Data Sciences Corporation during the 1960s. He left MDS and founded the Cogar Corporation, designing and manufacturing computer chips. He received an honorary doctoral degree from West Virginia University at Wesleyan for his expertise in computer science. George and his wife Ann established the Cogar Foundation for the purpose of awarding grants and scholarships to students of Herkimer County and to Herkimer County Community College students specifically to continue their education toward a bachelor’s degree. The Cogar Foundation's contribution to the Herkimer County College Foundation's "General's Campaign" resulted in the naming of the Cogar Gallery in 2000.
The current exhibit contains over 50 Russian Orthodox icons and religious objects from the collection of the Foundation of Russian History and Jordanville Holy Trinity Monastery, and will be on display through Friday, September 23. As part of the College’s 50th anniversary celebration, the Cogar Gallery will feature a faculty retrospective following the current exhibit.
Exhibits displayed this past year included the Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors Travel Show, “Proprioceptive” by Justin Como and Andrew McPherson, “Creation’s Recurring Themes” by Jeanette R. Durham and “Short Stories” by Dana Klein. Our exhibits vary in types of art, themes and styles, with many award winning pieces featured.
Located at the entrance to the Robert McLaughlin College Center, the Cogar Gallery is open to the public, free of charge, Monday through Friday during College business hours. Details regarding the current exhibit are available here.
