Campus President issues statement on Novel Coronavirus

Dear Campus Community,

I am writing to assure you that the College is closely monitoring the status of the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and preparing for its potential spread. Our leadership team is in constant contact with the SUNY system administration leadership team, the NY Department of Health and its local agency, and will respond accordingly.

At this time, there is no immediate threat or urgency to do more than take preventative steps to mitigate the potential spread of the virus. The most important measures we can all take, as recommended by the Center for Disease Control (CDC), are as follows:

  • Stay home when you are sick with respiratory disease symptoms. At the present time, these symptoms are more likely due to influenza or other respiratory viruses than to COVID-19-related virus.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue, then throw it in the trash can.
  • Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds; especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with 60%-95% alcohol.
  • Routinely clean frequently touched surfaces and objects.

With spring break scheduled to begin in just over a week, please consider the following as it pertains to travel:

  • Be aware of travel advisories and changes that may impact your plans. CDC travel information can be found here.
  • Avoid non-essential travel to Level 3 countries which currently includes: China, South Korea, Italy and Iran. The CDC recommends older adults or those with chronic medical conditions consider postponing travel to Level 2 countries which currently includes Japan. Please note that this list is ever-changing. You are encouraged to refer to the above link to the CDC’s travel recommendations.
  • If you travel, please be aware that travel advisories and restrictions can easily change while you are away, making it difficult to return.

Please note that in accordance with recommendations from the CDC, the State of New York has prohibited all New York State (including SUNY) work-related employee travel to the Level 3 and Level 2 countries until further notice (China, Iran, Italy, South Korea, and Japan).
If you experience symptoms of the coronavirus and believe you are at risk due to recent travel or exposure, you should:

  • Seek medical advice. Call ahead before you go to a doctor’s office or emergency room.
  • Avoid contact with others.
  • Not travel on public transportation.
  • Be extra vigilant about good hygiene.
  • Contact the Dean of Students Office at deanofstudents@herkimer.edu or 315-574-4009. Do not visit in person if you believe you are at risk.

The health and well-being of every member of our campus community is important, and we will continue to provide updates as appropriate.
