Herkimer College Students Give Back

The old adage "it's better to give than to receive" has certainly been demonstrated by Herkimer College students this holiday season. Despite the pandemic making it a bit more challenging to hold events and fundraisers, students did not let that deter them from getting into the giving spirit.

Participation in the Gram Lorraine Children’s Christmas program, organized by the Herkimer County Hunger Coalition, has been a long standing tradition for the Herkimer Generals athletic teams. This year, the bowling, volleyball, baseball, softball and esports teams all participated. Each team purchased and wrapped gifts of clothing in their favorite colors, new winter coats, sneakers or boots, and a toy, book or game.

The Upsilon Epsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Herkimer College held a drive for smoke detectors and donations to support the Never Again Fire Prevention program. This program helps ensure that every family in our local community has access to these important life-saving devices. The drive was done in memory of Kris Cagwin, a student at Herkimer College in the mid-80’s, who died in a house fire in 1988 with his brother and sister.

Emily Beames, a Generals Studies student from South Glens Falls, NY, conducted a book drive for her Honors Program project. Emily came up with the idea and coordinated the project from start to finish, collecting 350 new and gently used books for elementary school children in Herkimer. The books were donated by faculty, staff and students, as well as the Basloe Library.

Professor Jane Verri’s Marriage and Family class donated toys and other items to donate to Operation Candy Cane. Also a program of the Herkimer County Hunger Coalition, Operation Candy Cane supports active military personnel traveling through Syracuse Hancock International Airport. The program allows our military heroes an opportunity to choose a toy or gift for their child/children. It also provides the service member with a small gift for themselves, as a token of appreciation for their service.

These are just a few examples of recent acts of giving on the Herkimer College campus. We salute our students and all who have participated and supported efforts to help make a difference for others this holiday season.
