New Snap Eligibility Rules Mean Greater Relief for Students

Recent changes in SNAP policy have expanded SNAP eligibility to thousands of low-income New York State students, including students at Herkimer College.

SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and is the largest federal nutrition assistance program.

According to the new permanent rule, "individuals attending a SUNY/CUNY community college, comprehensive college, or technology college and enrolled at least half-time in a qualified CTE program meet the criteria to be considered an 'eligible student' for SNAP."

Addressing food insecurity has been a priority on the Herkimer College campus. In the fall of  2021, Herkimer was named one of 23 schools in New York and Idaho to receive support from Chobani/Swipe Out Hunger. The $4,500 grant enhanced efforts at The General's Cupboard, a free food and personal care source, which has been in operation since 2019.

“Food insecurity is a critical issue for many college students, and when this basic need is addressed, students can more readily focus on their studies, increasing their chances of academic success and completion," said Rebecca Ruffing, chair of the General's Cupboard Steering Committee. "We are proud of the support our food pantry has given to students over the past few years, but we also know there is much more to be done to address food insecurity. So it is important that we help get the word out about these expanded SNAP benefits.”

All currently enrolled Herkimer College students are eligible to receive assistance from The General's Cupboard. It is located in RMCC 117A and open during the academic year when the  College is open. Hours for the Spring 2022 semester are: Mondays 2 pm – 4:30 pm and Thursdays 9 am – 11:30 am.
