Is Herkimer College open?

While Herkimer College remains open for business, the campus is restricted to students who are approved to be on campus and critical staff only. We are following the directive of New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo and have reduced the number of staff on campus. Most employees are now working remotely until further notice. Phone calls and emails to departments and individual employees will be answered within 24 hours.

Essential functions that remain on campus — though in limited capacity — include mail reception, campus safety, facilities, information technologies, residence life and food service.

What are you doing about classes?

The academic team and faculty have transitioned on-campus classes to various alternative delivery methods. Students should have received communications from their instructors regarding each of their on-campus classes, and how they will be delivered starting Monday, March 30th. 

Are student support services still going to be available?

Yes. Many support services will be available to students remotely, including tutoring, academic advisement, financial aid and information technology.

How can I get tutoring help?

To request free tutoring, contact Josh Lanza at 315-866-0300 ext. 8275 or 518-620-3631 or email AcademicSupport@herkimer.edu or lanzajj@herkimer.edu. Josh will confirm an appointment for you (appointments will be scheduled for 30 minutes maximum). Tutors in all subject areas will be available for virtual chat or phone appointments. Virtual options include email, Webex, Zoom, Skype, GoBoard, and other options specific to the subject in question.

If you need help setting up your computer to participate in a tutoring session, please let Josh know when making your appointment.

If you have a draft of a paper/essay (complete or partial) and are looking for feedback rather than an appointment, send the document to etutor@herkimer.edu. Our writing tutors will review your paper, place Microsoft Word comments on it, and return it to you. This is not a paper editing service. Writing tutors will not make direct changes to documents submitted. Due to anticipated E-Tutor volume, please allow up to 72 hours for a reply.

For 24/7 tutoring, Net Tutor is available at no additional charge to Herkimer students. 

How do I access NetTutor?
1. Log into your account on Generals Online (www.herkimer.edu/go).
2. Once you are on your Generals Online homepage, in a box in the top left corner of the page labeled “Student Resources,” click “Open SUNY Student Orientation.”
3. On the left, you will see a drop down panel with several links. Click on the link that reads “Herkimer Student Success.”
4. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Net Tutor.”
5. Choose your class from the list. If your specific class is not listed, choose the class that most closely relates to the class you are in.

If I need help with Generals Online (GO), what should I do?

How can I access the Library resources?

Library resources remain available to Herkimer College students, although, from a distance, as they are closed to foot traffic. They offer a number of ways to access their resources digitally through their online catalog and digital databases. Students will need to login to MyHerkimer first to access all the features.

They can also be reached using LIBANSWERS by clicking on the “CHAT WITH US” box on the library's webpage. During non-business/off-peak hours, students can connect with a librarian for help using the “ASK US 24/7” featured on the left hand column of the page.

Please note that Interlibrary Loan has been temporarily suspended (per SUNY guidelines)

While many student requests made through direct interactions with staff can be resolved during that session, sometimes further work on our part is needed to help our students. Our goal is to complete most student requests with 1 to 2 business days.

Is on-campus housing open?

While we have encouraged students to return or stay home, campus housing will remain open for students who need to stay. Extenuating circumstances include housing, food and safety insecurities as well as technology limitations restricting them from completing their courses remotely.

Only students who have been approved to stay on campus are allowed on campus. They are required to observe Governor Cuomo’s stay-at-home mandate. Students without prior approval will not be allowed on campus.

What about spring sports teams?

The NJCAA has made the decision to cancel all spring sports, including all practices, regular season, post-season, and national championship play. According to the NJCAA’s announcement, no spring sport student-athlete who was enrolled at a member college in 2020 will be charged a year of participation. Read the full announcement here.

I paid for a full semester of housing and a meal plan. Will I get a reimbursement?

We are working quickly to resolve the financial impact this transition to remote learning will have on a student’s unused campus housing and meals for the remainder of the spring semester while taking into account student’s financial aid awards.

Students living on campus prior to the COVID-19 crisis will receive a refund or credit for housing fees and meal plan fees (if applicable) based on the proportionate time between when they leave campus housing -- or as cleared by Residence Life -- and the end of the spring term. Students living off campus with meal plans will receive a refund or credit for the unused portion of their meal plans. Students who withdrew prior to the COVID-19 crisis will not be eligible for a similar refund or credit.

Credits or refund approaches will be finalized as soon as possible. As soon as additional information is available, we will update you. If you have any financial aid questions or concerns, please be in contact with the Financial Aid Office.

Will the college be canceling upcoming campus events?

What are the plans for Commencement?

We have had to make a difficult decision regarding the commencement ceremony. On Friday, May 15, we will host a special virtual commencement ceremony to be streamed live, beginning at 4 p.m. Caps and tassels will be shipped to students at their home addresses.
