Pooled Surveillance Testing

In an effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Herkimer College is conducting pooled surveillance testing in collaboration with SUNY Upstate Medical Center. The test is quick and easy – you simply swab the inside of your mouth and provide the saliva sample to staff to be sent to SUNY Upstate Medical Center for testing.

You must register for the testing at www.suny-covid-test.com prior to arriving for testing. When registering you must provide health insurance information.  Please know that Herkimer College is providing this testing without charge to all students.  While you will never be charged for this testing, the health insurance information is a requirement.  Please contact the Dean of Students Office if you or your parents/guardians do not have health insurance.

  • You must bring your Herkimer Student ID card every time you test.
  • Please do not brush your teeth or use mouthwash 3 hours prior to testing.
  • Do not eat, drink, smoke or vape 30 minutes prior to testing.  This includes mints, throat lozenges and water.

If you have previously tested positive for COVID-19, you must contact the Dean of Students Office to discuss how your testing may differ.

If your employer requires COVID testing, you may be excused from testing if you bring proof of the negative results of that test.  Please note:  If your employer does not conduct testing on a weekly basis, you must participate in the College’s surveillance testing during the weeks you are not tested at work.

If you are not able to test on your scheduled day, you must contact the Dean of Students Office to adjust your testing schedule. Please email DeanofStudents@Herkimer.edu or call 315.574.4009.

FAQs

  • There is no cost to students or employees to participate in the pooled surveillance testing. Herkimer College is absorbing the cost of testing that is not covered by health insurance plans.

  • Students required to participate in the testing must register here before arriving at the test site:

    http://register.suny-covid.com

  • Residential Students: All Herkimer students residing on-campus will be required to have a “rapid” COVID-19 test upon arrival on campus as part of their move-in process (as will any accompanying adults who will assist the student with moving in).

They will be required to participate in weekly surveillance testing on campus throughout the rest of the semester.

Commuter Students: Commuter students will be required to have a “rapid” COVID-19 test before the first day of classes, either on campus during designated testing days or on their own time at a local Primary Urgent Care. Students who choose to get tested on their own time off campus must submit the results of their rapid tests to the Dean of Students Office via email at DeanOfStudents@herkimer.edu.

According to the CDC, people are considered fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving their second dose in a two-dose series, such as the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, or two weeks after receiving a single-dose vaccine, such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine.

Commuter students who are not fully vaccinated must comply with weekly surveillance testing through October 11. After October 11, only those who are approved for vaccine exemption will be required to undergo weekly surveillance testing.

Student-Athletes: All student-athletes, regardless of whether they are residential or commuter students, and regardless of if they have been approved for an exemption, will be required to participate in weekly surveillance testing.

Wednesdays each week will be designated testing days for student-athletes in the College’s surveillance testing site.
