Retirees Honored with Emeritus Status

The Herkimer County Community College Board of Trustees recently approved emeritus status for five retiring employees, effective September 1, 2017.

Associate Professor of Travel and Events Management Debra Sutton, of Ilion, NY, began her employment at Herkimer College as a part-time instructor in the Travel and Tourism program in 1989 and was appointed full-time in 1991. She was promoted to assistant professor in 1993 and associate professor in 1998. Sutton coordinated the first Travel Club scholarship, was the program mentor and advisor for the Walt Disney World College & International Programs, and has served on the Scholarship and Fall Fest committees. She was awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2014. Following Sutton’s retirement from full-time employment, she will continue to work with the Travel & Events Management curriculum as a part-time online instructor.

Professor of Social Science Dr. Timothy McLean, of Herkimer, NY, was appointed to the faculty in 1977 as a full time instructor. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1981, associate professor in 1988 and professor in 1991. Dr. McLean was a recipient of the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2006. His 40 years of service has also included serving as chair of the Student Judicial Review Board and faculty advisor for the Human Services Club. Following his retirement from full-time employment, he will continue working as a part-time instructor.

Professor of Physical Therapy Catherine Delorme, of Hamilton, NY, was appointed in 1995 as assistant professor. She was promoted to associate professor in 2008 and to professor in 2013. Dr. Delorme served on the Assessment Committee and chaired the Curriculum and Academic Policies committees. Dr. Delorme provided leadership in preparing the College’s reaccreditation for the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE).

Associate Professor of Business Guy Devitt, of Herkimer, NY, was appointed to the position of instructor in 1977, was promoted to assistant professor in 1981 and to associate professor in 1993. Devitt’s 40 years of service has included membership on several committees including the Faculty Development, Commencement, Fine Arts, Strategic Planning, Cogar Gallery and Fall Fest committees. He served as director of the Honor’s Program in 1997-1998 and employer specialist from 2006 to 2012. Devitt was awarded the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2007. Following Devitt’s retirement from full-time employment, he will continue to serve as a part-time instructor.

Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Alan Cronauer, of Utica, NY, was hired in 1984 as an instructor. He was promoted to assistant professor in 1995 and to associate professor in 2003. In 2014, Cronauer was appointed interim assistant to the associate dean of academic affairs for the Business, Health Science, and Technology division. Six months later, he was appointed associate dean of academic affairs for the Business, Health, Science, and Technology division. His 32 years of service has included serving on the Perkins Grant committee, the Student Judicial Review Board and the Strategic Planning/Institutional Effectiveness Committee. Cronauer received the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2003. Following his retirement from full-time employment, he will serve as a part-time instructor.

Emeritus status is an honor granted by the Board of Trustees to retired professional, academic and administrative staff members who have demonstrated excellence and commitment to making Herkimer College the exceptional institution it is today.
