Exciting careers in travel, tourism, hospitality, and events planning.

The Travel and Events Management program prepares you for a wide variety of employment opportunities in the travel, hospitality and events planning fields. The degree blends hospitality business operations in fundamental areas such as: convention, conference, meeting and event planning, management of hotel sales and operations and guest services. Students also gain an understanding of the tourism industry and its dynamics. Experiential learning is built into the program and range from 30-120 hours.  Sites include hotels, resorts, convention centers, event management companies, airlines, convention and visitor's bureau, Walt Disney World, and the American Hospitality Academy.

You'll be prepared to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the meetings and convention industry
  • Demonstrate knowledge of tour development, sales and operations
  • Perform front-office functions for a resort, hotel, or other work areas of the industry
  • Describe key marketing and promotion techniques for tourism
  • Research and demonstrate an understanding of domestic and international destinations
  • Plan and execute a convention, conference, or similar meeting

Career opportunities exist in airlines, meeting planning, corporate travel management, tour operations, cruise lines, hotels and resorts, tour companies, tourist attraction facilities, car rental agencies, theme parks, and other related industries. Meeting planners are listed as one of the 50 Best Careers of 2011 by U.S. News & World Report. While Herkimer’s Travel and Tourism program is designed to prepare students for entry-level positions, many students go on to a four-year college and transfer articulation agreements have been established with Niagara University, SUNY Delhi and Rochester Institute of Technology.

A hands-on internship experience is built into the program. Internships range from 60-120 hours and 3-6 credits. Sites include airlines, resorts, convention centers, event management companies, hotels, travel agencies, convention and visitors’ bureaus, and Walt Disney World. Many of the courses are taught in the Travel Suite which features a mock airplane, hotel front desk and computer lab. Optional annual trips, conferences and tourism activities are available.
