Phaethon Works Receive Awards

The Community College Humanities Association’s 2015 Literary Magazine Competition recently named their 2015 award winners.

Phaethon, Herkimer College’s literary magazine, was the second place winner from small colleges in the Easter Division. Three individuals also won awards from the competition. Zachary Vercz, Mohawk, NY, came in first place in the short stories category for his story, Poppy Seeds and Prince Harry. Shunyu Yao, Herkimer, NY, came in first place in the artwork category for his work, Untitled. Xavier Goins, Lacona, NY, came in third place in the artwork category for his work, Untitled.

The students and advisors have the opportunity to accept their awards at The Community College Humanities Association’s national conference.

Phaethon was re-launched last year after several year’s hiatus. Faculty advisors for the Phaethon are Andrew Devitt, Assistant Professor, English; Blake Pitcher, Assistant Professor, Digital Graphics; and Matthew Powers, Instructor, English. Powers said “We want pieces that challenge, inspire, stump, and move us. We crave new expression. New ideas. New connections. We do not value art that tests the boundaries of expression. We value art that obliterates them.”

Copies of the magazine may be obtained from faculty and administrative offices or by emailing litmag@herkimer.edu. A digital edition is also available at www.herkimer.edu/phaethon.
