Is Your Student Career Ready?

It is no longer enough to just obtain a college degree or have some relevant work experience when launching a career. Today’s new professional must demonstrate that they are career ready to be competitive in the job search.  The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) defines career readiness as “a foundation from which to demonstrate requisite core competencies that broadly prepare the college educated for success in the workplace and lifelong career management.”

NACE, through extensive research with employers, has identified eight core competencies that employers are looking for above and beyond the candidate’s college degree.

With this in mind, there are many ways the Herkimer College Career Services Office can prepare students to be career ready:

  • The Professional Development Workshop Series focuses on career core competencies each semester. Check out our schedule for the spring semester here.
  • The Herkimer Edge platform, accessed through the MyHerkimer portal, has several professional development modules where students learn about can develop soft skills at their own pace on their own schedule.
  • Employment coaches are available for in-person and virtual appointments and can help students to identify and articulate examples of their competencies during their job search. Stop by RMCC 302 or contact us at careerservicescenter@herkimer.edu for assistance.

Students have many opportunities at Herkimer College beyond obtaining a degree. We’re here to help ensure that students are developing core-career competencies along the way so when the time comes, they’ll be career ready.
