Point of Pride #32 - Volunteer Boards

May 23, 2017

Herkimer County Community College and its auxiliaries are governed by non-profit boards whose board members give of their time, knowledge, skills and experience to support the mission of their respective organizations. Serving as a volunteer member of a board is a great way to give back, serve the greater community, and support the community college mission.

As a community college in the State University of New York, Herkimer College is governed by a local board with 10 trustees -- nine community members of which five are appointed by the County Legislature, four are appointed by the Governor, and a student representative is elected by the student body. The Board of Trustees is responsible for establishing policies governing the college; selecting, appointing and supporting the college president; and delegating responsibility for the administration and execution of college policies to the administrators. The Board and its committees meet on a regular basis, and trustees often attend a variety of college events.

Guided by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of community, campus and business leaders, the Herkimer County College Foundation, Inc. supports the College by securing private resources. Since its inception 50 years ago, the Foundation has contributed millions of dollars to support the advancement of Herkimer College and the students we serve. Along with funds raised through annual events, individual and corporate donations have provided an endowment to ensure funding for one time capital projects and numerous scholarships including the Foundation Tuition Scholarship program.

The Housing Board serves to protect assets and oversight to the finances of the Housing Corporation, which manages three apartment complexes housing 630 students adjacent to the campus. The Housing board is made up of three administrators, two college trustees, two Foundation directors, and one community member.

The Faculty-Student Association (FSA) controls the fund that supports student activities, clubs and athletics, and also oversees the bookstore operation. FSA board membership consists of the College President, Student Government President, Vice President of Administration, three faculty/staff representatives and seven students.

We acknowledge and thank our College, Foundation, Housing and FSA board members who give generously of themselves to support and advance the mission of the institution, maintain fiscal integrity and ensure educational quality.
