This course is designed to provide students with a working knowledge of major microbiological concepts. This is achieved through the survey of microorganisms; the study of microbial structure, metabolism and genetics; and the analysis of microbial infection and disease. Basic laboratory skills and microscopy techniques are developed through hands-on exercises involving the isolation, culturing, characterization and identification of bacteria in addition to other selected activities.
