Morrett, Minasi and Grogan Region III Champions for Generals

DELHI, NY – The Herkimer Generals Track & Field team totaled three individual regional championships and seven All-Region members last Friday (5/1) and Saturday (5/2) at SUNY Delhi, the host for the 2015 Region III Championship. It helped the men finish second overall, scoring 132 points for the program’s highest finish ever at regionals. As for the women, their 78 points captured third place.

Sam Morrett (Cohoes, NY) and Jack Minasi (Newport, NY) were the two men to achieve individual championships. Morrett repeated in the 3000-meter Steeplechase, finishing in 10:09.46 which was 20 seconds better than his 10:29.74 in 2014. The sophomore placed Top 5 in the event throughout the season, knocking off precious seconds with each meet.

Minasi had the most success of any General with one first team and two second team All-Region mentions. His first team and Region III Championship came in the long jump, leaping a season-best 6.70 meters. It was just better than teammate Devlen Williams (Syracuse, NY), giving Herkimer first and second place in the event for the first time all season. Minasi’s second team mentions came in the high jump and triple jump. His season-best 2.03m and 13.53m gave the sophomore second place in both events, only competing in the high jump a year ago where he reached 1.88m successfully.

Maxine Grogan (Herkimer, NY) was the lone female to win an individual championship, doing so in the javelin throw. The freshman only competed in the event three times all season, throwing a season-best 27.32 meters when she needed it most. Grogan’s best throw before that was 26.32 meters, giving her second place in that meet.

Victoria Campanian (Glenfield, NY) joined Grogan on the All-Region Team, finishing second in the 5000-meter Run. The sophomore was unable to repeat as a champion in both the 5000 meter and 10000 meter, posting a 19:37.01 and 39:59.80 in 2015.

Up next for the team is nationals which will again be hosted close to home at Mohawk Valley Community College. The Hawks will have team’s compete at D’Alessandro Stadium in Utica, NY from Thursday, May 7^th till Saturday, May 9^th. Herkimer will look to build off of the eight individual national championships they got one season ago.
