AP Awardsedited

Students enrolled in the Communication Arts: Radio-Television Broadcasting program at Herkimer College can now add awards for “Best Regularly Scheduled Newscast” and “Best News Story” to their accomplishments. “HCTV News” won the top prize in both categories at the New York State Broadcasters Association Associated Press awards dinner on Saturday, June 6 in Saratoga Springs.

Communication Arts students Melissa Krull, class of 2014 (Cold Brook), Sean Messier, class of 2014 (Beaver Falls) and Kristofer Klosner (Ilion) were nominated for their role in “Best Regularly Scheduled Newscast.” In the newscast, Krull served as newscast producer and anchor, Messier was the director and Klosner served as the weathercaster. Krull also won in the “Best News Story” category for her work on “From HCTV to Eyewitness News” where she chronicled the story of three Herkimer College Communication Arts: Radio-Television Broadcasting students and their journey from Herkimer College to working at local TV station WUTR.  Krull said "To even have our work nominated in the Associated Press was an incredible honor. I am so thrilled that we won not just one, but both awards. It proves that Herkimer is just as capable of producing exceptional news as any private school or university in New York State."

Assistant Professor of Communication Arts Douglas Flanagan said “I’m very proud that the hard work of these students is being recognized by the Associated Press.  Winning in both categories, up against significant competing schools, is quite a testament to the level of commitment that these students showed throughout their short two years in Communication Arts programs at Herkimer College.” The student produced “HCTV News” will return to HCTV this fall with a new crew.
