Women’s soccer remains perfect at home with 4-0 win over Hawks

(Herkimer's Teigha Ward scores the first goal of the game on a corner in the first half).

(Grace Johnson gives Herkimer a 2-0 lead in the 40th after converting on this penalty kick).

HERKIMER, NY – Playing their third consecutive home game on Wednesday (10/7) against rival Mohawk Valley, the #2 Herkimer Generals increased their unbeaten record at home to 7-0, defeating the Hawks 4-0.

Herkimer (11-1-0) broke a streak of one goal games, three to be exact, netting that many in the first half against the Hawks. Captain Teigha Ward (Ilion, NY) got it started in the 22nd when a corner kick of hers was mishandled by Mohawk goalie Courntney Sherry, hitting her hands and deflecting into the goal for Ward’s 20th of the season.

The Generals leading scorer in the last two games against ranked opponents then got into the action, Grace Johnson (Tully, NY), nailing a penalty kick to the right side of the net in the 40th after being taken down just outside of the 18 for the 2-0 lead. It was Johnson’s third goal in her team’s last three games, adding an assist to her totals after the completion of the second half. She now has 10 goals and three assist on the season.

Giving Herkimer the 3-0 lead before halftime was Michaela Bianca (Guilderland, NY). The sophomore broke a three-game scoreless streak in the 42nd after she connected with Ward for her ninth goal of the season, giving Bianca three goals and two assists in her last five games.

In the second half, it took Herkimer some time to tally a fourth goal over the Hawks, doing it in the 83rd off the foot of Nicole Wren (Herkimer, NY). The freshman took a Johnson pass and netted her first goal as a General in her third game played this season, watching Herkimer shutout every opponent they’ve faced at home this season.

Collecting the team’s 11th shutout of the season was Sydney Stanley (Schoharie, NY). The sophomore didn’t record a save, but did a great job of not making it easy for the Hawks to get shots on goal. To date, Stanley has only allowed two goals past her in 12 games.

Herkimer will have four days off before they face a Top 15 opponent on Monday (10/12). That team is Hudson Valley. The Vikings are 7-2-1 with some impressive wins on their resume. Game time between the Generals and Hawks is scheduled for 12 p.m.
