Win streak ends at home with loss to #1 Cougars

HERKIMER, NY – Facing their third ranked opponent this season on Saturday (10/17), and the first time at home, the #5 Herkimer Generals men’s soccer team was unable to remain undefeated against ranked opponents, losing to #1 Genesee 3-1 in regulation which snapped an eight game win streak.

Herkimer (11-3, 5-1) didn’t score until the 53rd minute after going down 2-0 into halftime with goals in the 16th and 29th minute. Netting the lone goal for the Generals was Kevin Van der Slik (Zoetermeer, Holland) on a penalty kick. It was Van der Slik’s team leading 14th goal, scoring in six of his last seven games played.

The one goal advantage for the Cougars bumped back up in the 67th when Richard Fernandez-Sar scored the third goal of the game, putting it out of reach for extra play.

In goal for Herkimer was Morrice Baker (Bridgeport, CT) and Ian James (Saint Kitts, Caribbean Sea). Baker had two saves and James had zero in 90 minutes.

Up next for the Generals is the Region III Quarterfinals on Saturday, October 24th. Herkimer should host a game due to their regional record this season. After that, Herkimer College will host the Region III Championship at Wehrum Stadium.
