Swimming & Diving records 16 national times at Monroe
ROCHESTER, NY – Continuing their recent success, this time at Monroe Community College on Saturday (12/5), the Herkimer Generals swimming and diving program saw the men finish fourth and the women finish second, qualifying for nationals in 16 events at the aquatic center.
The men had Top 3 finishes in four events. Cameron Roten (Johnstown, NY) and Nicholas Herrlett (Gloversville, NY) captured two of them – both first place finishes - in one-meter diving and the 100 yd. Freestyle. For Herrlett, it was his fourth first place finish in diving, totaling 235.28 points. He beat second place by 71.71 points. As for Roten, it was his first time swimming the 100 all season, topping the competition with a time of 55.39.
Nicholas Lanckton (Holland Patent, NY) and Roten then swam for second place in separate events, the 1650 yd. Freestyle and 50 yd. Freestyle. Lanckton swam a 20:39.11, while Roten swam 24.34.
The women had one more Top 3 finish than the men, doing so in the 200 yd. Freestyle, 100 yd. Individual Medley, 200 yd. Individual Medley, 50 yd. Butterfly and 100 yd. Butterfly. Helping the Generals to that feat was Jensen VanNostrand (Macedon, NY) and Corinne Richer (Clinton, NY). VanNostrand had three third place finishes in the 50 yd. Butterfly, 100 yd. Individual Medley and 200 yd. Freestyle – posting a 33.53 in the 50, 1:14.90 in the 100 and 2:22.21 in the 200. Richer had a second and third place finish. Second came in the 100 yd. Butterfly (1:17.56) and third came in the 200 yd. Individual Medley (2:39.37).
Worth mentioning was the Generals five new school records obtained Saturday due to a new recording procedure this season. Dean Schrider (Holland Patent, NY) broke the record in the 50 yd. Butterfly (27.54); VanNostrand broke the record in the 100 yd. Individual Medley (1:14.90) and 50 yd. Butterfly (33.53); Leah Giacchetta (Rotterdam, NY) broke the record in the 50 yd. Backstroke (37.07); and Jordan Mercer (Oneida, NY) broke the record in the 50 yd. Breaststroke (41.34).
Herkimer’s next meet isn’t until after the New Year, traveling again to Rochester, NY for the Monroe Community College Invite on Saturday, January 16th. Competition is slated for 1 p.m.
