Roten breaks own record, program places first and second at Jamestown
JAMESTOWN, NY – The Herkimer Generals swimming and diving program had their best showing since November at Cazenovia, posting 17 best times and two national qualifying times at Jamestown on Saturday (1/23). It helped the men finish second overall (217 points) and the women finish first overall (324 points).
Swimming well for the men was Cameron Roten (Johnstown, NY), Nicholas Lanckton (Holland Patent, NY), Dean Schrider (Holland Patent, NY) and Jacob Cardinal (Newport, NY). Together the group captured two first place and six second place finishes in 11 total events. Roten and Lanckton managed first place finishes in the 50 yd. and 500 yd. Freestyle. Roten did the 50, posting a 24.59 which broke his own school record. Lanckton did the 500, posting a 6:02.85.
Second place finishes came from two relays and four individual events. Roten, Lanckton, Schrider and Cardinal swam a 1:56.42 in the 200 yd. Medley Relay and 3:54.54 in the 400 yd. Freestyle, then each captured second place in their respective event. Lanckton in the 1650 yd. Freestyle (21:02.23), Cardinal in the 200 yd. Freestyle (2:07.77), Schrider in the 200 yd. Individual Medley (2:23.61) and Roten in the 100 yd. Freestyle (55.12).
The women had one more Top 2 finishes than the men, along with one more first place outcome in 12 total events. Corinne Richer (Clinton, NY) and Jensen VanNostrand (Macedon, NY) received first place in the 1650 yd. Freestyle, 200 yd. Freestyle, and 100 yd. Butterfly. Richer posted a 22:02.63 in the 1650 while VanNostrand posted a 2:20.81 in the 200 and a 1:12.71 in the 100.
The final four second place finishes came from one relay and three individual events. Leah Giacchetta (Rotterdam, NY), Hannah Watts (Norwich, NY), Richer and VanNostrand combined to swim a 4:45.00 in the 400 yd. Freestyle Relay. Then Richer and VanNostrand added second place finishes in the 100 yd. Individual Medley (1:17.57) and 50 yd. Freestyle (6:18.29).
Tomomi Itadani (Okayama, Japan) captured the final second place finish in the 50 yd. Backstroke, swimming a 43.08.
The program will have their final meet of the regular season this Saturday (1/30) when they travel to Batavia, NY for another competition at Genesee Community College. Action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
