Herrlett Region III/District Northeast Champion in two events

ROCHESTER, NY – After three days of competition at Monroe Community College last week, the Herkimer Generals swimming and diving program captured second and third place overall and set six new school records, finishing Sunday (2/14) with 80 best times through 35 total events.

Helping the men to the “George Steitz Most Improved Men’s Team Award” was Nicholas Herrlett (Gloversville, NY). The freshman placed first in one-meter and three-meter diving to capture individual Region III/District Northeast Championships. Herrlett totaled 384.15 points in three meter and 479.50 points in the one meter, setting not only a school record in both events, but a meet record in the one meter. It was Herrlett’s sixth and seventh first place finish in diving this season, never coming in worse than first in that event.

Rounding out the men’s solid performance with Top 3 finishes were Nicholas Lanckton (Holland Patent, NY), Cameron Roten (Johnstown, NY), Dean Schrider (Holland Patent, NY), and Jacob Cardinal (Newport, NY). Lanckton led the group with two second and two third place finishes. Individually, Lanckton placed second in the 1650 yd. Freestyle which broke a school record, posting a 19:59.39, then captured third in the 100 yd. Breaststroke (1:11.99). To get his other second and third place finishes, Lanckton combined in relays with Schrider, Cardinal and Roten. Together they placed second in the 800 yd. Freestyle (8:26.50) and third in the 400 yd. Freestyle Relay (3:38.52).

Lanckton however was not the only male to capture second place in an individual event as both Roten and Schrider did it in the 50 yd. Freestyle and 200 yd. Breaststroke. Roten swam a 23.60 in the 50 and Schrider swam a 2:34.57 in the 200.

For the women, Corinne Richer (Clinton, NY) and Jensen VanNostrand (Macedon, NY) set the tone individually with Richer capturing three Top 3 finishes and VanNostrand adding two. Richer placed second in the 200 yd. Butterfly, posting a 2:42.18, then swam for third in the 1650 yd. Freestyle and 400 yd. Individual Medley, posting a 21:24.61 and 5:25.78. Her 21:24.61 in the 1650 broke Herkimer’s previous school record by Erin Hutchison (Macedon, NY) who was a regional champion and All-American in the event.

As for VanNostrand, the freshman got second in the 200 yd. Individual Medley and third in the 100 yd. Butterfly, posting a 2:36.43 in the 200 and 1:10.61 in the 100.

Capturing the final three third place finishes was one individual event and two relays. Jordan Mercer (Oneida, NY) posted a 3:06.79 in the 200 yd. Breaststroke, then joined Hannah Watts (Norwich, NY), VanNostrand and Richer in the 400 yd. Medley Relay to post a 5:01.01. Then Mercer was replaced by Leah Giacchetta (Rotterdam, NY) in the 800 yd. Freestyle Relay, watching them swim a 10:08.45.

Herkimer will now have 16 days to prepare for the national tournament which is at Indian River Community College in Fort Pierce, FL. The first day of competition is Wednesday, March 2nd, finishing on Saturday, March 5th. Prelims will begin at 9:30 a.m. every day.
